Chapter 211 Dr. Lizard
Chapter 211 Dr. Lizard
Chapter 211 Dr. Lizard
"Connors?"
When Gwen heard the name, she instinctively thought of the man she had brought home the night before.
"Did he go out into the city and cause chaos while I was sleeping last night?"
"But we introduced ourselves to each other before going to bed, and he seemed to have good intentions towards me—"
"But the facts are undeniable: there must be some connection between Connors, the Lizard Man, and the pizzeria!"
Gwen walked through the ravaged pizzeria and crawled out through a hole in the back wall.
She carefully examined the signs of damage, then raised her hand and fired spider silk diagonally upwards.
She wanted to return to her rented apartment and confront Connors face to face.
The pizzeria wasn't close to her apartment; it was a whole block away.
But Gwen the spider swung on her silk and dangled by the apartment window a few minutes later.
"If he really was the culprit who destroyed the pizzeria, wouldn't that mean he's actually a reptilian?"
Just as Gwen was about to open the window and climb inside, she suddenly stopped:
"If I provoke him here, will he get so angry that he destroys the whole apartment?"
Gwen felt somewhat constrained, whether it was vandalizing the landlord's apartment or worrying about the other residents living there.
"Maybe I should talk to him first and find an opportunity to take him away from the crowds and the apartment."
She quickly found a way to calm Connors down first.
Kacha.
The sound of the window latch opening was barely audible, and Gwen rolled into the bedroom.
She tried her best to control her emotions and said in an unusually cheerful tone:
"Great! The pizzeria needs renovations today, so the boss gave me a paid day off!"
No one answered her; the bedroom was empty.
"Are you watching TV in the living room? I think you must be hungry. Would you like something to eat?"
Gwen's heart was pounding, but she continued speaking in a relaxed tone, slowly walking towards the living room.
There was no one in the living room or the bathroom.
Gwen quickly checked all the windows and doors in the apartment and found that they were locked from the inside.
In other words, Connors mysteriously disappeared from the apartment without opening any windows or doors.
Gwen's heart jumped into her throat.
She instinctively panicked when a man who was likely a reptilian found out her name, address, and workplace and then disappeared.
"Whether it's for the safety of New York or for my own personal information, I have to find Gwen." She clenched her fists and made up her mind, but before she could finish speaking, a figure slowly emerged from nothing in the air.
"Connors?" Gwenran exclaimed. The guy who had appeared out of nowhere in the apartment was none other than the "Lizard Man" she thought had run away.
The Omega effect is quite useful—Connors commented with satisfaction on his newly acquired "Omega effect" ability.
Before he could even get his footing, he saw Spider Gwen staring at him with a blank expression.
"I retract my previous assessment. The 'Omega Effect' cannot achieve the kind of pre-emptive knowledge of whether there are people nearby at the destination, as 'teleportation' can."
He used "teleportation" to return to Earth Zero while Spider-Gwen was at work.
There, "Superman," "Lord Superman," "The Flash," and "Lord Flash" are engaged in a relay race from Earth to Mars.
"Speed" from the Justice Society acted as the referee, while the other superheroes, who were temporarily free from incidents due to Connors' departure, were responsible for watching the battle.
When Connors returned, the competition was already nearing its end, which is why he quickly returned to the universe where Spider-Gwen resided.
On the way back, he used "telepathy." On the way here, Connors wanted to test his "Omega Effect" ability, which resulted in the scene before him.
"How did you do that—no, that's not what I'm concerned about."
Gwen began, somewhat surprised, but then interrupted herself halfway through her sentence:
"You didn't have this ability to appear out of thin air in the spider silk trick you demonstrated yesterday. By the way, why is 'Mr. Fantastic' after you?"
"...No, no, what I really want to ask is, how did you know my class was gone? And is the pizzeria being eaten by the lizardmen related to you?"
After going through a few roundabout ways, Gwen finally asked her real question.
"No," Connors said with a strange expression, "but I have some special abilities—"
"This special ability helped me discover it the moment the lizardmen ate the pizza shop last night."
The "special abilities" Connors mentioned were simply supersensory abilities activated by "photosynthesis".
"Special ability? Commanding lizardmen?" Gwen asked in confusion.
She remembered the pizzeria owner saying that "the police response seemed to be related to Connors." In Gwen's opinion, there seemed to be some special connection between Connors and the Lizard Man.
"Where did you hear that from—" Connors knew immediately that Gwen had misunderstood. "I've never even seen a lizardman."
The only person he had ever seen who resembled a lizard man was the "Copperhead Serpent" from the "Super Villain Secret Society".
"I learned through special channels that the Lizardmen are related to you—"
Gwen slowly approached Connors, intending to appease him first, as she had planned, before leading him elsewhere.
"What does this have to do with me?" Connorston felt as if a black pot had been thrown at him from the sky.
But he wasn't going to take the blame so easily; the speed of thought brought about by "human limits" meant he wouldn't overlook relevant clues:
"The connection between the spider, the lizard man, and me—is clear if you replace 'I' with 'Connors'?"
"That biology PhD," Connors muttered to himself.
Among Marvel's villains, Connors has a particular fondness for "Doctor Lizard," which is why he used that nickname when he first arrived in Gotham.
The reason for using "Connors" as a name.
"A PhD in biology? You mean—another person named 'Connors'?" Gwen wasn't stupid; she quickly understood from Connors's mutterings.
"Yes," Connors nodded, his ears twitching as he heard the sound of a television broadcasting the news from another building several hundred meters away.
"Biology PhD" Curtis Curt Connors went missing last night. Connors didn't continue listening; instead, he quickly walked to the living room, turned on the television in Gwen's apartment, and found the news channel:
"His wife came to Imperial State University, where Dr. Connors was located, and learned that the doctor had gone into the laboratory last night and had not come out since."
"When students came to the doctor's laboratory, they found that the doctor was not there either. They only found a hole in the laboratory floor, which was suspected to have been left by some kind of reptile."
"The school is currently under lockdown, and people in New York City are in a state of panic, waiting for the police to find the crawling monster and rescue Dr. Connors."
"Passerby interview: I can't wait to see the 'Spider-Man' and 'Lizard-Man' fight in the city. Of course, it's the lizard, that's what everyone says."
"Passerby interview: Dr. Connors has always been a compassionate person and extremely responsible towards his students. I hope the police can bring him back as soon as possible."
A passerby interviewed: "I'm a little worried that the monster might be lurking in some sewer after it burrowed underground."
Are we dragging innocent people down with us once again?
"Passerby interview: New York police only point guns at ordinary people and order them to shut up—Where's Spider-Man? We need her!"
In the news report, the reporter clearly used this incident as a stepping stone to promotion and a raise, constantly interviewing passersby on the street to increase viewership.
Gwen watched the television screen intently. She walked to the window, leaned halfway out, and said to Connors:
"I'm going to Imperial State University."
She was going to Dr. Connors's lab to observe the scene.
