Chapter 471 Awareness
As February drew to a close, Lupin frowned slightly as he looked at the files spread out on the table.
This file comes from the International Confederation of Wizards and records a murder case that occurred more than fifty years ago at the German Ministry of Magic.
A Ministry of Magic Auror named Muller von Ansbach tragically died in a conflict, the details of which are unknown, and even who was involved is unclear.
But Lupin was quite lucky; he found those names with just a few glances.
Loila Hamilton was arrested due to a false accusation by the Malay Party and subsequently disappeared.
Gellert Grindelwald's appearance here is unknown, as is his specific actions.
And Igor Karkaroff—the Auror interrogator for the Ministry of Magic, who escaped the German Ministry of Magic after the incident and received secret protection from the British Ministry of Magic.
Quite coincidentally, three people appeared in the same incident at the same time, and two of them are now dead.
Moreover—they all have extraordinary relationships with Loila.
Lupin examined the dossier carefully—but the contents were not clear enough; the only thing he knew was that Müller died in the incident.
The cause of death was being struck by the Killing Curse—but the source of that curse remains a mystery.
The answer in the file was related to Grindelwald—but this answer didn't convince Lupin.
Müller came from the pure-blooded Ansbach family—even if he wasn't a supporter of Grindelwald, he wouldn't have been killed so hastily—
Moreover, according to Siegfried, he was the heir to the Ansbach family—so who could have killed him?
Although there was no evidence, the more Lupin looked at Karkarov's name, the more he felt something was wrong.
He had worked for the German Ministry of Magic before, and the German Ministry of Magic had been under Grindelwald's control for quite some time. Why did he betray Grindelwald after that?
Did something happen?
Lu Ping paused for a moment, holding the quill pen, then casually sketched a few lines on his notebook.
What if it was because he killed Muller?
This rather bold guess—without any basis—is simply a guess that makes the development of events seem logical.
As the heir to the Ansbach family, Müller would undoubtedly be highly regarded by Grindelwald—but if he were killed by Karkaroff—
It's normal for Karkaroff to escape—but why did Karkaroff kill Müller?
They were classmates—and also colleagues—
Lupin gritted his teeth and looked at another name—it was Loila's name, which he had drawn in a big circle.
According to the Ministry of Magic's later investigation—Royla did not conduct any Dark Magic experiments, nor did she have any relationship with Muggles—so she was wrongly accused.
So, would Muller, who is her friend, help her?
Lupin had heard some things from Siegfried before; the relationship between Müller and Löw was far from ordinary—they weren't just classmates, nor were they simply senior-junior colleagues.
Müller von Ansbach once—very likely—loved Löw—
Although Loila didn't seem to know about this—judging from her previous answers—she felt guilty about Muller's death.
But what is the source of this guilt?
Miss Ansbach provided the answer—Müller had died for Leura.
And it is very likely that Karkaroff was the one who killed Muller.
Looking at his densely filled notebook, Lupin was at a loss for words—was this just speculation—or the truth?
He didn't know—and wasn't sure—but—if it were true—Naroy—
And why did they wait until today to kill Karkaroff?
After a few seconds of silence, Lupin got his answer.
That was the time—Royla disappeared after that, and according to Headmaster Dumbledore and Royla herself—she seemed to have fallen into a coma.
Until she woke up recently—then she wouldn't have known Karkaroff's fate—most likely, she thought Karkaroff was dead—
But that's a bit too subjective and speculative.
Lupin shook his head, unable to believe his own guess, since the answer it pointed to was one he didn't want to see.
He never believed Roy was the murderer—but—but if all these speculations were true—then Roy's act of killing Karkaroff—
This perfectly matches Lupin's understanding of her—she would absolutely do such a thing for a friend—
"Hoo—" Lu Ping took a deep breath and slowly closed the file and notebook.
Perhaps I shouldn't be so arbitrary, shouldn't I?
Instead, we should ask Roy what he thinks?
Perhaps she will find an answer for herself?
After all, all of my guesses were just nonsense.
"Bang bang bang".
There was a sudden knock on the office door, which startled Lu Ping.
He pursed his lips, looked up, and asked, "Who is it?"
"Remus," Dumbledore's voice rang out, "I have something to discuss with you."
It was Headmaster Dumbledore—although he didn't know why he had come, Lupin quickly put away his files and notebooks before opening the door to the room.
"How have you been lately, Remus?" Dumbledore looked at Lupin with an air of nonchalance, as if he had just happened to be passing by and had come in to inquire as if he had just remembered.
"Not bad, Headmaster Dumbledore." Lupin chuckled softly, then asked, "What can I do for you?"
"Ah—it's about the case." Dumbledore said, slowly sitting down. "You and Mr. Steinberg have been investigating for two months."
"The International Confederation of Wizards and the Ministry of Magic both want to know your gains."
Lupin tapped his finger lightly on the table. After thinking for a few seconds, he said, "I haven't gained anything yet—"
"I'm not sure about Mr. Steinberg's side yet."
"Mr. Steinberg has already submitted a report to the International Federation of Wizards." Dumbledore's words startled Lupin.
"When?" he asked immediately.
"Just recently," Dumbledore said after a moment's thought, "probably yesterday."
"Then—" Lupin thought for a moment and asked, "Could you tell me the contents?"
"I thought this was the result of your joint communication." Dumbledore seemed a little surprised.
“That’s not the case,” Lupin said, shaking his head. “Mr. Steinberg didn’t tell me he was going to submit a report.”
"I see—" Dumbledore nodded knowingly, his white beard twitching slightly, before saying, "Then may I ask for your opinion?"
Who do you think is the most suspicious?
'
,
Lupin was momentarily speechless. Loila's name was on the tip of his tongue, but he couldn't bring himself to say it—
"I don't know either—" he shook his head and finally said.
Dumbledore showed no expression upon hearing this; he simply nodded.
Then she said quietly, "I thought you would also suspect Miss Hamilton."
"After all, Mr. Steinberg has already proposed the idea of interrogating Miss Hamilton." Dumbledore's words made Lupin's eyes widen for a moment.
"Interrogation?
"However, we all feel it went a bit too far." Dumbledore gave a reassuring smile. "After all, Miss Hamilton didn't have much of a motive, did she?"
"Yes—yes." Lupin subconsciously picked up the conversation.
Dumbledore nodded slightly. "So it seems—you...you don't think Miss Hamilton is the murderer, do you?"
"Remus".
His tone was calm, but Lupin felt a slight tension—and an inexplicable sense of pressure. Dumbledore was still Dumbledore; his expression was indifferent and showed no sign of anything amiss.
But Lupin remained silent for a few seconds before replying, "I don't believe Miss Hamilton is involved in any way."
"That's good, Remus." Dumbledore nodded and slowly rose to his feet. "I'm glad to have this answer."
He said this and walked away, and Lupin only wiped the sweat from his forehead after he had completely disappeared.
I must find Loila—and immediately—
