Chapter 3 Heartbreaking
Chapter 3 Heartbreaking
"I'm so angry, I didn't even get to have a son..."
After gritting his teeth and cursing twice, Chen Rang took out his phone.
He found a membership pre-charge card posted on the outer wall and called the number left in the lower right corner.
But soon, the ringing tone of "The number you dialed is currently switched off" made his face turn as black as ink.
At this point, he already had a very bad feeling.
But to be honest, he absolutely did not want the possibility he suspected to occur. And the large padlock locking the door from the inside also allowed him to retain a sliver of hope for the time being.
Right now, no matter what, we have to rescue this poor cat first before we can think about anything else.
Chen Rang planned to call the police, but hesitated after dialing 110. Simply abandoning a cat didn't seem to constitute a crime. He remembered his teacher saying that for a conviction, there were many additional conditions…
Therefore, Chen Rang decided to try a different approach.
Because of this, it's necessary to notify the landlord first.
He quickly scrolled down to his mother's phone number on his phone, and with a bitter face, he got the landlord's contact information from his mother, who was in a bad mood because her trip was ruined.
While anxiously waiting for the call to connect, he used the time to push the door open as wide as possible.
He gently tapped on the glass opposite the door, hoping that the cat would be smart enough to squeeze through the crack in the door.
However, the cat seemed to have no strength left. Even when Chen Rang opened the door wide enough, it remained lying there motionless.
Chen Rang was extremely anxious.
Just then, Dou Dou, who had been squatting at Chen Rang's feet staring blankly at the glass door, suddenly screamed for no apparent reason.
It jumped up quickly as if startled, and squeezed through the crack in the door.
Before Chen Rang could react, it vanished from his sight.
"DouDou!"
Chen Rang only had time to shout once before he was speechless.
Because he never imagined that the cat that needed help hadn't even come out yet, but DouDou had already gone inside.
He was immediately dumbfounded.
Because no one knows what the situation is inside, no one knows if there are other dangers inside, and no one knows if DouDou will get into trouble if she runs in.
There are already dead cats inside. Who knows if there are still dead viruses? That idiot DouDou impulsively ran in; what if she gets infected? Or even if she doesn't get infected, what if she gets hurt by the complicated environment inside…?
"That troublesome guy, he always causes trouble!"
With a low growl clenched through gritted teeth, Chen Rang kicked out fiercely without saying a word.
With a loud bang, the sturdy glass door remained completely still, but the cat, who was also stunned, was startled by the sound and almost jumped up.
It stared blankly at Chen Rang, then glanced back in the direction Dou Dou had left, momentarily unable to process what had happened. The creature just stood there, looking ahead and then behind, its eyes filled with bewilderment.
Just as Chen Rang was about to kick the door again and even planned to find a brick nearby, a slightly familiar voice suddenly came from his phone.
"Hello, who is it?"
"Aunt Xie?"
Memories from the depths of his mind quickly returned, and Chen Rang soon recalled the other person's identity. Aunt Xie was a neighbor who had watched him grow up; after more than ten or twenty years of living together, there was no way he could completely forget her.
So he quickly explained the situation.
Worried that Aunt Xie might not care, he reminded her of how much a negative situation on the first floor would affect the rental of the house, and asked Aunt Xie when she could come over to deal with it, etc.
"I'm in Chu City taking care of my grandson! Xiao Rang, could you help me with this?"
Aunt Xie was furious when she learned the details, but quickly said that she couldn't come back right away.
Upon learning that she couldn't contact the cat cafe owner, she was slightly worried, but then readily granted Chen Rang full authority to handle the matter. She was about to give him a few more instructions, but the sound of a baby crying beside her forced her to hang up.
This result left Chen Rang speechless.
Because he doesn't actually like meddling in other people's business, and he's not really qualified to do it.
But what can we do when DouDou is still inside? Nobody knows what the situation is like inside, or if there's any danger. If we delay too long, it would be terrible if something happened to DouDou too.
With a sigh, Chen Rang quickly contacted the locksmith again.
"DouDou! DouDou?"
While waiting for the locksmith to open the door, Chen Rang kept calling out to that troublesome guy.
However, DouDou did not respond at all.
Instead of getting there, two more cats appeared in the cat cafe.
Their condition was equally poor, and they quickly approached the silver shaded cat. The three pitiful little creatures were all thinner and weaker than the last. They crouched and lay down by the glass door, staring intently at Chen Rang.
They didn't make a sound, just stared up with their eyes fixed on the ground, their seemingly hopeless and lifeless eyes were heartbreaking to look at.
Chen Rang felt a headache.
He waited anxiously for a full fifteen minutes before the locksmith finally arrived on his electric scooter.
The door lock opened easily, and Chen Rang breathed a sigh of relief.
He covered his nose and went inside, finally managing to find the light switch to turn on the living room light. At that moment, he finally saw clearly just how terrible the situation inside the cat cafe was.
The once neat and spacious living room was now a mess.
The area that was originally supposed to be a chess and card room and gaming area has now completely disappeared without a trace.
There was nothing of value on the coffee table, just some discarded packaging boxes. Looking around, the overturned sofa, the broken chairs, the playing cards scattered all over the floor, the damaged chandelier, and the carelessly discarded power strips covered in torn tape made the whole room look quite gruesome.
Even the glass door to the adjacent pet area was broken, with shards of glass scattered all over the floor.
Chen Rang guessed that the cats must have come to the outer hall through this gap, bringing with them a mess of excrement and urine and a terrible stench that could kill a person.
Deep within the dark pet area, Chen Rang could still hear faint meows from cats.
Clearly, there are more than just these three abandoned cats in the cat café.
This made Chen Rang's expression even more unpleasant.
Because anyone with a normal sense can see that the owner of this store... has most likely already run away.
Although he didn't know why the cat cafe owner hadn't taken all twenty-odd cats with him, Chen Rang concluded that the cat cafe had been completely abandoned by the owner as soon as he saw that there was nothing of value left in the shop.
But what he couldn't understand was why they didn't take the cat with them?
Even if you have nowhere to put them, you can give them away! Why keep the cats locked in a house where no one takes care of them? Are you going to let them starve and die of disease in there?
Chen Rang could not accept this.
"People these days... they're so immoral! Even animals have lives, how can they be so heartless? Sigh~"
The locksmith took the money, peeked inside a couple of times, shook his head and sighed a couple of times, then hurriedly left as if it were none of his business.
Chen Rang pursed his lips and did not respond, continuing to walk inside with a blank expression.
As he ventured deeper inside, he gained a clearer understanding of the interior layout.
The house was a complete mess, and the first cat they had seen earlier was confirmed to be dead, with no chance of saving it.
There was no need for a close inspection, because the stench of the corpse was enough to make one nauseous.
Despite the pungent smell, Chen Rang frowned and gave the three cats at the door a quick check.
One of the long-haired cats was so scruffy and disheveled that who would guess it was actually a Ragdoll? But by this time, it was already walking very unsteadily. This cat was not only severely hungry, but also seemed to be sick; in any case, Chen Rang felt it was extremely weak.
The silver tabby next to it was not only very dirty, but its buttocks and belly were also covered with all kinds of feces and urine.
It likely has serious gastrointestinal problems, which can be fatal.
The third cat was a thin Russian Blue. It seemed to be in slightly better condition, with no other obvious abnormalities besides being dirty and smelly. But it was just as hungry, thirsty, and exhausted, and was still trying to act fierce.
Chen Rang didn't know what to say.
Even that's not the worst of it.
When Chen Rang confirmed that the three cats were safe in the short term, he cautiously entered the cat petting area, leaving them behind, and continued to call for DouDou. He finally got a response and found the little rascal by his voice.
There was another cat with DouDou.
