Chapter 350 - 175: Excuse Me, Is This Conscience I’m Feeling?
"I think I get it, but I also don’t."
Xino laughed. "No wonder you’re so good at making money. You’re just like my dad—so complex and full of schemes."
"..." Xu Yun.
’He wasn’t sure if she was complimenting him or insulting her own father in the process.’
A moment later, a cheerful tune played, signaling that class was over for the children.
They all came swarming out.
They were about to run to the playground, but the director suddenly called out, "Everyone, Sister Xino is here!"
When the children heard the director, they all turned to look. Their eyes lit up instantly. Laughing and chattering, the whole group came running in their direction.
They immediately swarmed around Xino, calling out, "Sister Xino! Sister Xino!"
Xino crouched down and asked with a smile, "Have you all been behaving yourselves lately?"
"We have!"
One of the children said in a high, sweet voice, "Sister Xino, we’re learning how to count and read with Teacher Chen!"
"Wow, that’s so impressive!"
Xino smiled. "In that case, I’ll just have to give each of you a reward."
"What is it, Sister Xino?"
"Chocolate, of course."
Xino turned to look at Xu Yun behind her, then asked the children, "Do you all see that man over there?"
"Yeah!"
"He’s holding the rewards I brought for all of you."
Xino said, "All you have to do is run over and give him one compliment, and he’ll give you your gift."
"Yay!"
The group of children immediately swarmed over to him.
"Mister, you’re so handsome!"
"Mister, you’re so tall!"
"Mister, you have really nice eyes!"
"Mister, you have a really nice smile!"
"..."
Listening to the children’s compliments, Xu Yun smiled and handed out the bags he was holding, one by one.
Before long, all eighteen children had a bag.
Chen Rui, the intern preschool teacher who had followed them out, was a young woman of about twenty. When she saw the chocolate bags in the children’s hands, she was utterly stunned.
’Is that... Louis Vuitton chocolate?’
’She’d never bought it herself, but she had seen it in the news on her phone.’
’Today was supposed to be the grand opening of the Louis Vuitton chocolate boutique. The lines were so long it was basically impossible to buy any.’
’One of her roommates had gone and hadn’t even been able to get in the door, let alone buy anything.’
’She never expected to see something so hard to get right here, in this shelter.’
’And so many of them, too! One for every single child.’
’If her roommate saw this, she’d probably cry with envy.’
Snapping back to reality, Chen Rui looked at Xu Yun, who was still holding a few more boxes of chocolate, and had a thought. ’He must be some rich heir.’
Xu Yun had also noticed the newly arrived teacher, Chen Rui. He walked over, smiled, and handed her a box. "Teacher Chen, thank you for your hard work."
"Thank you." Chen Rui smiled, accepting it with feigned composure, though inwardly she was ecstatic.
’I can’t believe I got one, too!’
Xu Yun then gave a box to the director and another to the cook, which was just enough for everyone.
Once Xino saw that all the children had received their gifts, she led them back into the classroom.
She said she was going to give them a music lesson and teach them a song.
The song was called "Butterfly."
The director stood beside Xu Yun, who was a new face here, and explained, "Every time Xino visits, she always teaches the children a new song before she leaves, in addition to bringing gifts."
"Yes, she has a beautiful voice."
Xu Yun said, "I’ve heard her sing before."
The director asked curiously, "May I ask how you two met?"
"At a bar. She saw how handsome I was and started chasing after me."
The director: "..."
"Just kidding. We were introduced by a friend."
Xu Yun said, "Why do you ask? Is there something you wanted to say to me, Director?"
"Oh, it’s nothing."
The director said, "I just wanted to tell you that Xino is a wonderful girl, with a very kind heart."
Xu Yun understood the implication.
’She’s telling me: ’She’s such a good, kind-hearted girl. Please don’t hurt her!’’
Xu Yun changed the subject. "Director, may I ask you a question?"
"Go ahead."
"How much longer do you think you can keep this shelter running?"
The director replied, "Until I run out of money and can no longer afford it."
"And can your current finances sustain it?"
"Right now, the shelter’s income comes from some government subsidies and the money Xino donates from time to time. It’s just barely enough to maintain the current situation."
"So what would happen if, from now on, I had Xino stop donating?"
The director froze for a moment, then answered frankly, "Without Xino’s help, things at the shelter would become difficult. But I would understand. She’s been supporting us for two years, and I’m already incredibly grateful for that. Besides, I would find other ways to keep this shelter running."
"Good. Then from now on, Xino will no longer be making any donations to your shelter."
Xu Yun added, "Her visits to see the children and the gifts she brings them don’t count, of course."
"Alright, Mr. Xu. I understand." The director gave Xu Yun a pained look and nodded in agreement.
She assumed Xu Yun was simply forbidding Xino from donating any further.
But that wasn’t it at all. He had thought of a much better solution.
"Director, from now on, I will have someone provide a monthly stipend to support you. It will be used to gradually improve the living conditions here and cover all daily expenses."
"Really?"
"But, let’s be clear about one thing: I want oversight."
Xu Yun continued, "If I find that anyone is lining their own pockets with this money, not only will I stop the funding, but I will also find a way to send you to prison."
The director gave her word. "No problem. I promise you, as long as I am here, that will never happen. Every single cent you provide will be spent on the children."
