Chapter 2050 - 2048: The Six-Syllable Great Brightness Mantra (Part 1)

Ma: Represents green, symbolizing the compassion of the deity, belonging to the perfection of patience, and can remove jealousy;Green is the Dharma color of the Vajradhara Tathagata; the green light of accomplished wisdom purifies the jealousy in the Asura Path, cutting off the suffering of conflict.

Ni: Represents yellow, symbolizing the body, speech, mind, deeds, and virtues of the deity, and can remove greed;

Yellow is the Dharma color of the Unmoving Tathagata; the yellow light of innate wisdom purifies the ignorance and greed of the Human Path, cutting off the calamities of birth, old age, sickness, death, and poverty.

Ba: Represents blue, symbolizing the great joy of the deity, belonging to the perfection of giving, and can remove ignorance;

Blue is the Dharma color of the Infinite Light Tathagata; the blue light of the essence of the Dharma realm purifies the ignorance of the Beast Path, cutting off the suffering of darkness and dumbness.

Mi: Represents red, symbolizing the great joy of the deity, belonging to the perfection of giving, and can remove stinginess;

Red is the Dharma color of the Akshobhya Tathagata; the red light of marvelous observation purifies the stinginess in the Hungry Ghost Path, cutting off **suffering.

Hum: Represents black, symbolizing the compassion of the deity, belonging to the perfection of diligence, and can remove anger;

Black is the common Dharma color of the five Buddha families, eliminating all sins to signify extinguishing the hatred of beings in the three realms; the black light of great round mirror wisdom purifies the anger in Hell, cutting off the suffering of heat and cold.

The infinite merits of upholding the Six-character Great Brightness Mantra cannot be fully described, even by the Buddhas. Some of its benefits include: 1. The practitioner’s physical ailments and obstacles will be purified. Verbal karma is purified, planting the seed of wondrous sound. All ignorance and stupidity of the mind will be purified, receiving the blessing of the wisdom of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. 2. If the practitioner diligently cultivates, they can transform their ordinary body, speech, and mind into the Vajra body, speech, and mind of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and even cultivate the Shariputra from the flesh body. 3. Even reciting the Six-character Great Brightness Mantra once can obtain infinite wisdom, ultimately giving rise to compassion and perfecting the six Perfections. Besides, they will be born as a Turn Wheel Saint King, reaching the non-retreating Bodhisattva realm and enlightenment. 4. Whoever, human or non-human, sees, hears, remembers, or touches the Six-character Great Brightness Mantra immediately plants the cause of becoming a Buddha or Bodhisattva.

In summary, reciting "om mani padme hum" can clear away the six afflictions of greed, anger, ignorance, arrogance, jealousy, and stinginess, blocking the gates of the Six Paths, transcending the cycle of rebirths, and being reborn in the Pure Land to achieve bodhi.

Om, how inherently, like the Ruyi Treasure Pearl, can generate hundreds of thousands of Dharma.

Ah, as truly illuminated, heart like a lotus, emerges from mud unstained.

Hum, infinite sentient beings, swiftly achieve unsurpassed enlightenment in the Buddhist path.

The merits of holding the mantra are beyond words. Men and women, young and old, rich and poor, all can chant, day and night, in any posture, without exception.

The number of mantra recitations, the more the better. One hundred and eight recitations at a time are suitable. Completing ten thousand recitations constitutes a cycle. The body must be pure, avoid onions, alcohol, and meat.

Raise the bodhi mind, generate great compassion. Sincerely take refuge in The Bodhisattva Guanyin. The heart focuses on one state, not scattered. Practiced long-term, disasters and diseases are completely avoided,

Whatever is prayed for shall be as wished. Reciting this mantra can remove demonic obstacles; reciting this mantra can avoid harm; reciting this mantra can eliminate karma obstacles;

Reciting this mantra can generate wisdom; reciting this mantra can achieve accomplishments; reciting this mantra can escape rebirth; reciting this mantra can go to the Pure Land;

Reciting this mantra, its efficacy is extraordinary.

Single-mindedly, I devote myself to the Three Jewels, compassionately and genuinely benefiting others, the beautiful sun shines on me and you, love permeates the body with great strides. om mani padme hum

Endless confusion leads to Asuras, the Buddha’s icy jade forms a spiritual rhinoceros, the Sangha harmonizes in Lu Ye, saving others, saving masters, saving oneself. om mani padme hum

In the filthy night, a lamp dispels stubborn ignorance, one cannot be without steps when high above, climbing mountains and ridges, traversing plains, crossing rivers, pretending to use boats and oars. om mani padme hum

The Great Compassionate Mantra spills forth a string of jewels from the mouth, silently praying transforms into jade, Amitabha Buddha blesses ten thousand miles, the inferno does not scorch you. om mani padme hum

The Six-character Mantra soothes the chest and mind, having chanted, having pondered, all is as you wish, pledging love to the Buddha, even the biting cold wind has warmth. om mani padme hum

The mantra in the heart becomes a powerful tool, no one in the world can be her adversary, even with a thousand hardships and a myriad of dangers, Hell can become a green field. om mani padme hum

Pursuing fame and profit is inherently void, cause and effect follow, distinguishing good from evil, the road of Reincarnation turns tightly in mind, don’t let evil thoughts confuse you. om mani padme hum

The chaotic world is so bewildering, only by peeling away good from bad can one grasp the true essence, bite into the green mountain without letting go, good people must persevere to the end. om mani padme hum

Jade has flaws and people have scars, obtaining Buddha Treasures truly is not easy, cultivating oneself freely as in the past, losing the Buddha heart would be the real pity. om mani padme hum

Acquiring wealth and indulging in desires, yet still yearning to ascend to the heavens and descend to earth, the sea of desire is boundless with karmic retribution, the Buddha’s wise eyes never close. om mani padme hum

Peaceful mind, few desires, cultivating the body, the roots of sin will not ruin you, reviewing right and wrong thrice daily, holding onto continual meditation, ascending the heavenly ladder. om mani padme hum

Through cultivation, you develop a strong body, the vast wildlands can no longer confuse you, dispelling disease, eliminating evil, seeking great virtue, the Bodhi’s gentle wind leads you. om mani padme hum

Mani’s spiritual heart is within the Three Jewels, a solemn promise resides in the Buddha body, graceful and elegant jade rests on the platter, fervent passion, never-ending. om mani padme hum

Honoring the lotus seat with reverence at the top, All-Loving Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara cleanses karmic sins like a wash, the Buddha Fruit bestows inherently good roots. om mani padme hum

The Tathagata’s spiritual radiance pervades throughout earth and heaven, the compassionate stars guide you, may all beings reach the blissful land, Buddha Light illuminates with clarity. om mani padme hum

The Buddha declared: Virtuous man, this Six-character Great Brightness Mantra is Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Mahas’ subtle true heart. If one knows this subtle true heart, they will understand liberation. At that time, Bodhisattva who dispels obstacles said to the World-Honored One: World-Honored One, among all sentient beings, is there anyone who can understand this Six-character Great Brightness Mantra? The Buddha replied: There is no one who knows. Virtuous man, this Six-character Great Brightness Mantra, the infinite corresponding Tathagatas are still difficult to understand, how can the Bodhisattvas comprehend the subtle true heart of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva? I traveled to other realms and found no one who understands the Six-character Great Brightness Mantra.

If someone can consistently bear this Six-character Great Brightness Mantra, during their chanting, there will be assemblies of ninety-nine sand grains’ worth of Tathagatas from Ganges River’s sands; and likewise a number of Bodhisattvas as numerous as dust particles; and thirty-two Heavenly Princes who all gather; additionally, the Four Great Heavenly Kings will protect them from four directions; many Sahajala Dragon Kings, Heatless Dragon Kings, Decha Jia Dragon Kings, Vasudha Dragon Kings, and numerous uncountable dragons will come to guard this person. Additionally, Earthly Yakshas and Void Gods will also protect this person. Virtuous man, from the pores of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva’s body, assemblies of Tathagatas praise this person: Good! Good! Virtuous man, you are awarded the Ruyi Mani Treasure, your seven generations of species will all obtain liberation. Virtuous man, one who bears the brightness, carries all internal creatures that will attain non-retreating Bodhisattva position.

If someone further carries the Six-character Great Brightness Mantra, wearing it on their body or neck. Virtuous man, if you meet this wearer, it’s akin to witnessing the Vajra Body, as witnessing Shariputra Stupa, or seeing the Tathagata, as seeing one endowed with infinite wisdom. If any virtuous man or virtuous woman can meditate on this Six-character Great Brightness Mantra per the Dharma, this person will gain inexhaustible eloquence, obtain the purity of the wisdom congregation, and achieve great compassion. Such a person, every day, gains the Perfection of six paramitas, the royal initiation of turning the heavenly wheel. The breath from this person’s mouth, when it touches another person, the touched person will develop a compassionate heart, be free from all anger and poison, and attain non-retreating Bodhisattva position, quickly realizing Anuttara Samyaksambodhi. If this bearer touches another with their hand, the touched person quickly attains Bodhisattva position.

If this bearer sees men, women, young boys, virgin girls, and even alien species with sentient bodies, those seen will quickly attain Bodhisattva position. Such a person will never suffer birth, aging, sickness, death, or the pain of separation from loved ones, and obtain unimaginable corresponding recitation. Now, this Six-character Great Brightness Mantra is expressed thus:... At this time, the Lotus Tathagata spoke of the merits of this Six-character Great Brightness Mantra saying: Virtuous man, for all dust particles, I can count their quantity. Virtuous man, should anyone chant this Six-character Great Brightness Mantra once, the merits acquired I cannot count. Virtuous man, just as with all sands of the great ocean, I can measure each grain’s quantity. Virtuous man, should you chant the Six-character Great Brightness once, the merit obtained I cannot count. Virtuous man, similar to the creation of a granary by divine beings, encircling a thousand Yojana, towering a hundred Yojana. Storing sesame seeds filled within, without room for a needle. Those Guardians are neither old nor dead. Over a hundred centuries, they cast one sesame grain outside, even if the granary is emptied completely, I can measure its quantity. Virtuous man, if one chants the Six-character Great Brightness once, the meritorious actions obtained I cannot count. Virtuous man, likened to the four Great Continents, sowing various grain and wheat crops. The Dragon Kings showering rain timely, planting all things to maturity. Harvesting complete, with the Southern Continent as the field, using chariots transporting, all completed, all become a great gathering. Virtuous man, such as I can measure each single grain’s quantity. Virtuous man, if chanting the Six-character Great Brightness once, the meritorious deeds obtained, I cannot measure. Virtuous man, these Southern Continent’s great rivers, flowed day night, namely Xiduo River, Jiang River, Yanmuna River, Vachch River, Saturuna River, Zan Nai Luo Po Nie River, Ailuo Madi River, Su Mo Ye Tuo River, Xi Mo River, Jialuo Shuna River.

Each river has five thousand tributaries, each day and night flowing into the great sea. Thus, virtuous man, for these great rivers, I can count each drop of water. Virtuous man, if chanting this Six-character Great Brightness once, the meritorious deeds obtained I cannot measure. Virtuous man, also as the four Great Continents’ all four-legged beings; lions, elephants, horses, wildebeests, water buffalo, tigers, wolves, monkeys, deer, goats, jackals, rabbits, such four-legged species, I can count each hair. Virtuous man, if you chant the Six-character Great Brightness once, the meritorious deeds obtained I cannot measure. Virtuous man, likewise, Vajra Hook Mountain King, towering ninety-nine thousand Yojana, under eighty-four thousand Yojana. This Kang Ksha Hook Mountain King spans each side eighty-four thousand Yojana. This mountain has people neither old nor dead, one eon circling this mountain round once. Such Mountain King, with my Kusha robes, I can brush without surplus. If anyone chants this Six-character Great Brightness once, the meritorious rewards obtained I cannot say completely. Virtuous man, also like the great ocean, deep eighty-four thousand Yojana, the mouth extending immeasurably. I can use a single hair’s tip, dip completely without surplus. Virtuous man, if anyone chants this Six-character Great Brightness once, the meritorious deeds obtained I cannot say thoroughly. (To be continued.
