Chapter 688 Do Your Best
Chapter 688 Do Your Best
Marilyn could see from the interaction that they were slowly losing out in this argument. Marilyn had actually meant to invite Mark to this meeting earlier so that they would give Mark an offer for collaboration, just like they had given to Gunter and all the other Sovereigns. This way, Mark would have more of a reason to stay in the country and the country could be assured that if they were ever in trouble, then they could count on Mark to come to their aid. But from what Marilyn was hearing, not only would they not be able to strike the deal with Mark, Mark was intending to leave the country constantly to help out in other parts of the world! That could end very badly if other countries heard about this!
It was the same as stating that the country was going to be sending a large bulk of its military out to other countries constantly in order to help those other countries! Any of their enemies that hear about this might see it as a show of weakness and take the opportunity when America was without its defender to attack!
Marilyn turned to her right to give George a look of worry, but she was surprised when George shook his head to tell her that he was not going to speak up. George told Marilyn that he had only come here as a liaison for the Superhuman Alliance. He didn't have any business talking when it came down to situations that involved running the American economy like this.
But although George was using this as an excuse, the truth was that George was actually in support of Mark's plans to move around the world and help out as many people as possible. The Superhuman Alliance was not a national body like the NSA, it was an international body that governed superhumans all over the world. The Superhuman Alliance was in charge of ensuring superhumans did not abuse their power, and they were also in charge of providing aid for parts of the world that did not have the superhuman presence to handle any dangerous anima that appeared and threatened them.
So, hearing that Mark wanted to start going around to help other countries actually looked like a good thing as far as George was concerned. George knew that he could never control Mark, and telling Mark to join the Superhuman Alliance's cause was just going to ruin his already fragile relationship with Mark due to the former actions of Henry Ford. But if it was Mark that was going to start doing all of this on his own, then why would George try to stop him!? George was simply going to accept it! George didn't look a gift horse in the mouth and he never misses an opportunity when it presents itself so easily to him!
Another general spoke up. This one had red hair, greying blue eyes, and wore the uniform of the Navy Corps complete with a beret.
"Mr. Vanitas, Miss Luna, I heard from my sources that you two are trying to combine your two guilds together: The Vanguard and Moonlight guilds. Now that you're going to be taking in international superhumans as well, are you trying to make it into a global guild? There is a delicate balance between us and the Russians right now, and if they learn that an American guild is trying to take in international superhumans, the Russian president might think we are preparing for something."
Arit glared right back at the general! No one had more power than Mark, and if the Russian president tried anything, then America would retaliate! It was just that simple!
'These fucking cowards are afraid of some other ruler when the KING is sitting right in front of them!? Heatenes! Fools! Blasphemers! They should be hung from the highest buildings as a warning to everyone who would dare to underestimate the KING!'
The QUEEN's voice shouted loudly in Arit's head as the QUEEN noticed that the generals were all looking down on Mark. Arit glared at everyone sitting opposite her and Arit was about to speak up, but Mark put a hand on her lap under the table and made her stop. Arit felt the anger dissolve once she felt Mark touch her and she huffed and folded her hands while sitting back in her chair. Mark spoke up next.
"We don't have any business with the Russians for now, but if there was ever a time when he forced our hand, then we'll deal with him. I've heard about the state of Russia and how its people are living, that isn't the sort of man I think we can try to reason with. All we can do is move forward and see what sort of reaction he will have to our actions. Well, if that's all, then we will be on our way. We'll begin our activities soon, so you shouldn't be surprised by our departure anytime from now. Thank you for understanding."
That was Mark's signal to end the meeting and he stood up with both Arit and Luna and was about to leave, but Marilyn suddenly spoke up before he could go. There was desperation in her voice that showed just how serious she was at that moment, and it made Mark stop and listen to her.
"But if... if there was ever a time when we faced a crisis and you weren't here. If America was in trouble and our strongest superhuman was not available. What would we do?"
Mark's answer was immediate.
"You'll do your best to hold on and I'll do my best to arrive as quickly as I can. If that's all, Madam President."
