Chapter 62 Jealousy
Chapter 62 Jealousy
Chen Rang knew something quite interesting: different cats have different needs for nail trimming frequency.
Cats like Little Munchkin, DouDou, and Big Blue Cat like to run around and scratch, and their nails get worn down during their movements. As a result, Chen Rang found that they almost never needed their nails trimmed after catching them.
While breeds like Ragdolls, American Shorthair tabbies, and the laziest silver tabby cats have nails that grow at almost the same rate as other cats physiologically, their nails grow significantly longer and become very sharp due to lack of exercise.
At this point, human intervention is necessary; otherwise, the sharp fingernails could scratch clothes, bedding, and prick the skin, easily causing trouble if not handled carefully.
The important thing is that this thing hurts terribly when it pierces the flesh!
When Chen was trimming the American Shorthair tabby's nails, he didn't expect it to suddenly struggle. Before he knew it, it scratched the back of his hand, leaving two bloody scratches.
"You better behave yourself!"
With a sigh, Chen Rang threaded two shackles onto the guy's head. The pain was a minor issue; the main problem was that all this commotion had chased away his sleepiness. He'd only intended to kill some time before bed, but what if it resulted in insomnia?
"Subaru~"
The American Shorthair tabby was also a little aggrieved. You attacked me without saying a word and even pinched my paws so hard. Why can't I struggle a little?
"I just can't do anything with you guys!"
Chen Rang ultimately indulged these little guys, patiently trimming their nails for them.
The night was quiet, and apart from being woken up by a group of cats the next morning, nothing particularly unusual happened.
Shortly after going downstairs, he received a call from the son of the injured old lady from the previous night. He had been in a hurry to take his mother to the hospital yesterday and hadn't had a chance to thank Chen Rang properly, so he called today specifically to let him know.
"No need for meals. You should take better care of your mother! Honestly, she's already this age. Is it really necessary for her to go out scavenging late at night?"
Chen Rang's tone towards the man wasn't very friendly.
Because, frankly, in his view, the son, as the elderly person's family member, should bear the vast majority of the responsibility for the accident last night and the hard work that Li Shiwei and the others put in for several hours yesterday.
Even though the elderly woman went out on her own, Chen Rang learned from Li Shiwei that she had been scavenging for several years. Her family wasn't actually short of money, and her son and daughter-in-law both had stable jobs, so it was clear there was a problem with how they were caring for her.
The man argued on the phone that the old woman had no worries about food or clothing, and that she insisted on going out to collect scraps because she had nothing better to do. But if she really had plenty of cash, was the old woman stupid and unwilling to enjoy life, choosing instead to endure hardship?
Moreover, regardless of the circumstances, the children clearly did not do a good enough job in terms of care.
"I feel it's unfair to the police officers who worked so hard yesterday. They're so unlucky to have children like this in their jurisdiction!"
After the man hung up the phone indifferently, Chen Rang found a reason for his behavior.
He stated that he wasn't trying to defend Li Shiwei, but simply felt that some responsibility shouldn't fall on the police. It's truly unbearable that their normal rest is disrupted by something that could easily be avoided.
"What?"
Ni Youlin happened to walk into the clinic at that moment.
She was wearing a black dress, which looked quite nice. But wearing that color in the sweltering heat made her look rather silly. Yet, paired with her aloof expression, the outfit added a touch of ascetic coolness to her look.
She had become much more familiar with Chen Rang and had the courage to speak up first. However, with her somewhat naive eyes, she still looked like someone who was easy to bully.
Why are you here so early today?
Chen Rang responded with a smile.
"..."
Ni Youlin tilted her head and thought for a moment, then remained silent.
Chen Rang was already used to her mute nature, so he didn't press the matter. The two didn't even exchange any further words; one was busy with clinic matters, while the other squatted by the cat shelter watching the cats, neither disturbing the other.
However, when he suddenly thought of the rumors that his neighbors had been spreading last night, Chen Rang's eye twitched involuntarily.
He was worried that if Ni Youlin continued to come over every day, who knew how the rumors would evolve? Maybe after a while, people would start spreading rumors that he and Ni Youlin were already married.
But we need to get rid of this poor fellow...
He couldn't bring himself to say such heartless words.
With a sigh, Chen Rang could only decide to let things take their course. Even if this girl was curious and fond of the cats, she'd probably get tired of them after a few days. Once her attention shifted, the clinic would naturally return to peace and quiet.
"Dr. Chen!"
Customers arrived at the door and greeted me before even entering.
Chen Rang peeked out and saw that Zhou Meijuan had come over early in the morning. She saw Ni Youlin squatting in the cat house and looked her over curiously; she only stopped paying attention to her after Chen Rang came out.
"Dr. Chen, is my baby alright?"
"It's great, the surgery went well, and the recovery is going well too. And look how well-behaved it is now after the surgery! This shows that the factors that were causing it distress have been resolved."
Chen Rang led Zhou Meijuan to the cat shelter.
The blue and white cat, lying in its cat house with a look of despair on its face and its head wrapped in an Elizabethan collar so it couldn't even curl up, suddenly brightened up when it saw its owner. It jumped up as if it had seen a savior and started meowing at Zhou Meijuan through the window.
Seeing her child's excited expression, Zhou Meijuan became nervous.
"Dr. Chen, what's wrong with it?"
"It's feeling wronged and wants you to save it! But you can't give up now, post-operative recovery is no joke."
Chen Rang couldn't help but chuckle as he explained, while also reminding Zhou Meijuan not to spoil the cat too much. It's true that cats can hold grudges and might become estranged from their owners; but even so, their health is the most essential thing cat owners should focus on.
For at least the next month, even after being brought home, this blue and white cat will need daily medication and weekly checkups. If the owner abandons treatment because the cat resists, it could lead to serious consequences.
"Of course I understand that! Dr. Chen, don't treat me like a child! I may spoil this guy, but I still know what's important, okay?"
Zhou Meijuan was disgusted that Chen Rang looked down on her, so she couldn't help but slap Chen Rang's arm.
This action made Ni Youlin, who had been secretly watching from behind, raise her eyebrows once, then again.
She didn't know what she was thinking, but she just felt that this woman's behavior was a bit inappropriate. She was just a customer, someone who only owned a cat; how could she just casually try to take advantage of her?
"I've never done that before!"
Ni Youlin looked down at her palms.
Her stopping the stroking displeased Grandpa Yin, who looked up at Ni Youlin and barked, then rubbed his raised tail against her knee.
Immediately, Ni Youlin disregarded everything else and obediently continued working.
"Dr. Chen, who is she?"
Zhou Meijuan had noticed Ni Youlin long ago. After all, the girl was younger and prettier than her, and had good taste in clothes. How could she not pay attention to her? But Ni Youlin had a stern face that kept strangers at bay, so she could only secretly ask Chen Rang about it.
"she is……"
Chen Rang was stunned for a moment.
How should I introduce it?
Customer? Ordinary friend? Someone you've interacted with and are somewhat familiar with? Or someone you have a very good relationship with, someone you could potentially develop a romantic relationship with?
Chen Rang didn't know how to express himself for a moment.
Clearly, this is a perplexing topic.
Even the focus of this positioning isn't on Chen Rangrang's side. What exactly is their relationship? Perhaps it depends on how Ni Youlin determines their identities. And given her naive nature, that conclusion is hard to say.
However, there is one thing: they are definitely not in a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship.
Chen Rang smiled but did not answer.
Zhou Meijuan had only made a casual remark, and if she didn't get an answer, so be it. She also had to go to work today, and it was already a rare treat for her to squeeze in time to come and see her child; so after saying hello, she hurriedly left.
Once again, only Chen Rang and Ni Youlin, along with a group of boisterous cats, remained in the clinic.
The blue and white cat, in particular, let out a desperate howl when it discovered that its owner had abandoned it and run away.
Inspired by it, the little Munchkin and the big blue cat also started howling and meowing, which annoyed Chen Rang so much that he quickly hid in the clinic room.
Unexpectedly, Ni Youlin followed.
