Chapter 56 Li Shiwei's Dream
Chapter 56 Li Shiwei's Dream
Go back outside.
Even though only one cat left, the clinic inexplicably felt much emptier.
I was planning to relax and take a break, but when I picked up my game console, I found that it was out of power.
This stuff that was picked up for free is no good; it's probably just a second-hand item from that cat cafe. And playing with it plugged in with the charger just doesn't feel right, plus the TV connection hadn't arrived yet, so Chen Rang had no choice but to put it down reluctantly.
Feeling bored, he went to the door and looked around.
The owner of the breakfast shop across the alley was cleaning up after work, wiping tables and chairs, pouring water, and washing pots. He looked up and saw Chen Rang standing outside the clinic with his hands on his hips, and couldn't help but greet him.
"Xiao Rang, are you just killing time? People with skills are different; they easily earn more than us roughnecks, and they have it so easy!"
"No way! My shop hardly gets any customers all day. Unlike you, Uncle Xu, you work hard for two hours every morning and easily make over 100,000 a year."
Chen Rang exchanged pleasantries with a smile.
"Pah! What are you saying? Don't you see I have to get up at three or four in the morning every day to work?"
The man surnamed Xu retorted irritably.
The two chatted idly for a while, but didn't have much to say. However, the man quickly remembered something and hurriedly reminded Chen Rang, "Little brother, let me tell you something. Be careful lately. I heard that some people at the furniture store are making a scene, saying they want to cause you trouble. Apparently, they're talking about the time you took that thief to the police station. I suspect they're in cahoots, maybe planning revenge. So, lately, don't go out unless you have to."
"To get revenge on me?"
Chen Rang was taken aback for a moment, then couldn't help but laugh, "Uncle Xu, what era are we living in? Revenge? Do they even dare to show their faces? Those kinds of people should just stay hidden in the sewers! If they dare to show their faces, I can send them to the police station for a reunion with me with just one phone call!"
His words were filled with disdain for these petty thugs and thieves.
As times have changed, calling the police has become a zero-cost operation that takes only one second, and with ubiquitous cameras controlling every street and alley, the cost of committing crimes in reality has become extremely high.
I've heard that the vast majority of criminals have turned their attention to the internet.
Only the invisible electronic world of the internet can provide them with the same unbridled space to act as it did in the past when making phone calls was inconvenient and police had difficulty searching for criminals.
And perhaps in a few years or a decade, when the online world is as firmly controlled by the police through various means as it is in the real world, where and in what direction will these criminals flee to eke out a living?
Chen Rang couldn't figure it out, but that didn't diminish his contempt for this kind of person.
Of course, that's one way of saying it.
Although Chen Rang looked down on these kinds of people, he wouldn't completely let his guard down. After all, these people weren't capable of causing any major damage, but their annoyance was still quite bothersome!
So he immediately ordered a camera online and told Li Shiwei about it during dinner that evening.
"Oh, you mean this? Don't worry, it's all fine. Nobody will bother you. Through the interrogation of the two thieves that night, we've already wiped out their entire petty theft gang. As for that revenge your neighbor mentioned, while those guys were still sitting at home discussing how to commit a crime, each of them boasting that they were the toughest, we took them all down. Their criminal plan was over before it even got a chance to be carried out."
Li Shiwei waved her hand at Chen Rang, a barely suppressed sneer on her face.
"So efficient?"
Chen Rang was somewhat surprised; he hadn't expected the police to handle the incident so swiftly and efficiently.
"After all... we're police officers!"
Li Shiwei smiled and tucked her hair behind her ear.
What she didn't tell Chen Rang was that she had to use a lot of persuasion at the police station to catch the whole group in one fell swoop.
The police station's original plan was to investigate the clues step by step without alerting the thief, but when she learned from the interrogation records that the thief had an upstream supplier and a history of retaliating against victims, she immediately became restless.
At her pleading, the captain of the police station in charge of the case finally relented and issued an arrest order that very night.
Of course, it was precisely because this operation was efficient enough that it ultimately managed to capture all seven members who were gathered together discussing what to do next.
"Wow, that's amazing!"
Listening to Li Shiwei's description, Chen Rang was deeply moved.
"It's nothing, it's just what we should do. And to be honest, cases that require collective action like this are becoming increasingly rare for police stations these days. Generally, these kinds of criminal cases are eventually handed over to the district or city authorities; as a police station, we deal with more trivial matters. Many times, reports of children not coming home from school, elderly people not returning home by evening after going out for a walk, or being scammed online are already considered major cases for the police station. After a while, once the household registration business is gradually taken over by the community, I feel like the police station will soon be obsolete."
As Li Shiwei spoke, she vigorously shoveled meat from the grill onto her plate. She ate and talked at the same time, her mouth dripping with oil, seemingly without any regard for maintaining her image in front of Chen Rang.
Chen Rang wasn't very hungry, so he just slowly kept grilling the meat for Li Shiwei, flipping it, and handing her napkins.
"Our country can never do without police stations! You might not be as conspicuous as the Public Security Bureau or the mounted police on the streets, but when it comes to stability, you're always the pillars of the nation. Don't you think that? If people could live near a police station, their sense of security would increase significantly? And when it comes to friendliness, you guys definitely have the most interaction with the people, don't you?"
As Chen Rang spoke, he helped Li Shiwei unscrew the beverage bottle.
God knows why a policewoman who can catch thieves and do armed off-road driving would say she's helpless when it comes to unscrewing bottle caps.
"Anyway, I still want to move to the police station. The cases there... tsk, they seem more exciting. Maybe when I'm in my thirties or forties, I'll consider sitting in an office at a police station or working as a duty officer in the community."
As Li Shiwei spoke, she gritted her teeth, and a mouthful of oil sprayed out, which she couldn't catch with her hands.
Chen Rang quickly handed her a tissue, but was speechless at her disheveled appearance with her neck stretched out. Especially when Li Shiwei gestured with her eyes that her hands weren't clean and asked him to help wipe them, Chen Rang felt more like he was serving a younger sister.
This guy doesn't act like he's part of the family at all!
"Seriously! You're a girl, why are you always thinking about fighting crime? That kind of thing should be done by three big, strong men, right?"
Chen Rang held Li Shiwei's hand while speaking the truth.
"However, many crimes now involve women. Especially in drug-related and prostitution-related crimes, female perpetrators often make up the majority. In such cases, female police officers must be involved; otherwise, many things become inconvenient."
Li Shiwei let Chen Rang help her wipe her hands, smiling broadly. But there was no hint of giving up in her words.
Seeing that Chen Rang didn't seem to take it seriously, she pouted and emphasized, "Don't think I'm daydreaming! Actually, let me tell you, not only in our city of Shashi, but all over the country, there's a huge shortage of female police officers on the front lines. After all, although it sounds harsh, there are just too few female police officers willing to endure hardship and take risks. This isn't just a matter of their own actions, but also family factors! So, transferring me to the front lines is actually simpler than you think."
"Really?"
Chen Rang raised his head.
He had genuinely thought Li Shiwei was just joking with him, or simply admiring the prestige of a criminal investigation police officer. But upon hearing her last words, he suddenly realized that this woman had already made her decision and was giving him a heads-up.
He glared at Li Shiwei with annoyance and said sarcastically, "So you're the kind of person who can endure hardship and take risks! Your parents worked so hard to raise you so that you could fight criminals in the future."
"Yes! That's what my old man told me. He said it's called a daughter following in her father's footsteps."
Li Shiwei shrugged.
Now, Chen Rang didn't know how to respond.
Having a father who doesn't care about his daughter's safety is either a blessing or a curse for Li Shiwei.
It's probably because of that old man's teachings that this guy keeps wanting to go to the front lines. She just finished the third phase of her internship, and now she's going straight to criminal investigation?
