Chapter 1133: The Rejected Toy
Chapter 1133: The Rejected Toy
Two days later, when Arthur Sutton returned from a business trip, it happened to be Friday, just as the two kids were getting out of school.Without bothering to go home and drop off his luggage, he instructed the driver to head straight to the kindergarten entrance.
Parents were already gradually picking up their children from school, and he wasn’t sure if his two kids were among them yet.
Arthur Sutton didn’t have the necessary pickup authorization, so he couldn’t enter the school, and decided to wait at the school gate.
When he got out of the car and walked toward the school gate, he saw Janelle Tollman’s car parked by the roadside.
Usually, it was the kids’ grandmother who picked them up because Janelle was busy with work at the store. Why did she come personally today?
Although he didn’t know the reason, Arthur felt a surge of excitement and anticipation.
Travel-worn and not having had a chance to change his clothes, he hastily tidied his hair and attire using the car window.
Unexpectedly, the mother and two kids were already walking towards him.
Since Arthur Sutton was positioned in the direction where Janelle had parked, she spotted him as soon as she stepped out.
But she didn’t show any unusual reaction, just intentionally slowed her pace, casually listening to Noah excitedly talk about the teacher’s reward sticker.
However, sharp-eyed Noah didn’t miss a thing.
"Uncle Sutton?!"
Arthur stood there stunned for a moment, and upon seeing Janelle and the kids, he immediately straightened up, stopping his hair-adjusting actions in front of the car window.
Noah instinctively let go of Janelle’s hand and was about to run toward Arthur, who moved forward, prepared to hug the child.
"Noah!"
Janelle called out to him, and Noah immediately stopped and turned to look at her.
"Did you forget what Mom told you?"
Noah hesitated, glanced at Arthur, then turned back to Janelle’s side.
Arthur paused for a moment but took the initiative to step forward, softly asking Janelle, "How come you came to pick up the kids today?"
Janelle held the kids’ hands and pulled them slightly behind her.
This small gesture clearly showed her guard against him.
Arthur felt a sting in his heart but understood Janelle’s actions.
Janelle’s smile was stiff and formal, "The kids’ grandmother is on a group trip, and coincidentally, the store hasn’t been busy lately."
After explaining, Janelle immediately asked, "What brings you here, Mr. Sutton?"
Arthur came up with a lame excuse, "Just passing by. I happened to buy some toys for the kids in the car, should I bring them over now or send them to the store tomorrow?"
Before Janelle could speak, Noah, standing next to her, piped up, "I don’t want toys."
The child’s tone was somewhat downcast, unlike the earlier excitement when saying "Uncle Sutton."
Arthur found it a bit strange, crouched down to look at Noah, and with a light smile said, "Don’t you want the bear that’s as tall as you?"
Noah’s eyes visibly sparkled with anticipation, but he hid beside Janelle’s leg and shook his head, seriously explaining to Arthur in a soft voice, "Mom said we shouldn’t take toys from others."
Only then did Arthur understand the change in the child’s mood.
Janelle chuckled lightly and said to him, "Mr. Sutton, we’re more like passing acquaintances, always accepting your kindness feels a bit presumptuous. I’m sorry for the trouble my kids caused you before, they didn’t know better."
As Janelle said this, she was also observing Arthur’s reaction.
Unfortunately, Arthur didn’t show much emotion, making Janelle question her own thoughts once more.
Perhaps the resemblance between Chase and him was just a coincidence.
Seeming to want to explain something, but constrained by the presence of the two kids, she stopped short and said, "Since you’ve already bought them, then please just send them to the store tomorrow."
"Thanks for the trouble, Mr. Sutton."
Janelle left holding the two kids’ hands, and Noah, who usually had a good relationship with Arthur, didn’t even say goodbye this time.
He began to realize that trying to integrate into this family by starting with the kids might not work; he would have to bridge the gap with Janelle first.
