Chapter 5 Attack
Chapter 5 Attack
The two quickly went to the window of the private room and looked in the direction from which the sound came.
A crooked wooden stick, studded with many iron nails, was seen coming from not far away and smashing down on the heads of civilians.
The rusty red metal nails pierced through the fragile flesh on the side of the civilian's skull in an instant.
Like a watermelon that has been accidentally dropped on the ground, bright red blood mixed with a nauseating white slurry gushed from the wound.
"Enemy attack!!!!!"
Looking in the direction from which the wooden stick was thrown, one could see at least sixty or seventy green-skinned creatures charging toward Gem Town.
Goblin.
These infamous green-skinned creatures appear in almost every dimension that can be associated with the word "fantasy".
These short-statured creatures are inherently greedy and despicable. If it weren't for the fact that their average intelligence is among the lowest of all intelligent beings, perhaps we could also add the adjectives "cunning" and "deceptive."
The species are heavily biased towards the "evil" camp, and their low productivity due to their backward intelligence often leads to their survival behavior being associated with "plundering" and "theft".
Furthermore, since their race lacks females, they must rely on plundering mates from other intelligent races to reproduce.
This has led them to have a reputation that is, to some extent, even worse than that of abyssal demons or hellish devils.
However, goblins are relatively weak in individual combat. A peasant woman with a pitchfork can easily take down a goblin that is not carrying any weapons or equipment.
So these little things are like stray dogs on the roadside.
A single animal may not amount to much, but once they gather together, the group can reach double digits, triple digits, or even more.
The goblin's audacity and destructive power would increase exponentially.
Such as plundering caravans, attacking villages and towns...
Especially when their population grows to a certain size, an elite individual with leadership capabilities will naturally emerge.
If left unchecked, they could even grow into a kingdom-level disaster.
These goblins have not only developed the ability to attack humans, but have also clearly progressed to the point of raiding villages and towns. If they are not stopped, they will eventually launch an attack on cities and even the kingdom.
The civilian corpses lying in the streets at this very moment are enough to prove this point.
"Bang!"
"These goblins are incredibly audacious! Our army isn't even ready to break camp yet, and they dare to sneak in at this vulnerable time!"
Uncle Reger suddenly stood up and slammed his hand on the table. He walked to the door, quickly put on his military uniform and grabbed his sword, and strode towards the stairwell.
Without hesitation, Gerns quickly walked to the door, grabbed his clothes and sword, and ran towards the stairwell.
The two hurried down the stairs to the first floor, only to find that the soldiers who had been drinking and raising their glasses in the tavern were now holding their weapons and had already squeezed out of the tavern door to block the goblin army's invasion.
The civilians outside the tavern ran towards the town center under the cover of the soldiers. However, some civilians were not so lucky. They were caught up by goblins not far away and their heads were smashed open with wooden clubs covered with iron nails.
Just as the tavern owner, Sylphie, hid under the wooden counter, three goblins who had sneaked in during the chaos pulled her out. One of them grabbed her hair and dragged her toward the tavern's exit.
"Help! Someone please save me!"
Sylphie wildly punched the goblin beside her.
"Kid, you rescue the landlady first, then come out and help her from behind."
Uncle Reggler glanced back at Gerns, then drew his sword without hesitation and ran outside the tavern to provide support.
Gerns nodded, drew his sword, and charged forward. Taking advantage of the three goblins' inattention, he beheaded the one closest to him.
The remaining two goblins reacted instantly upon realizing their companion had been ambushed, shifting their target from Sylphie to Gerns.
The two goblins were half-hunched over, their eyes filled with greed and eagle-like glints that seemed to pierce right to the heart.
Engli noticed that they were only wearing a tattered and stained white cloth around their waists, and each of the goblins was holding a wooden stick with nails in its hand.
In addition, goblins are always narrow-shouldered and thin-waisted, and with a height of half a person, if they didn't appear in groups, Engri might not have taken these monsters, which are worse than wild dogs, seriously.
Unfortunately, the tavern itself was quite cramped, making it easy to hesitate when attacking, especially since Gerns was facing two goblins.
Furthermore, with both goblins targeting him at the same time, there's no guarantee that other goblins won't take the opportunity to sneak into the tavern and launch a sneak attack.
Moreover, they have a hostage in their hands.
"It's a bit troublesome to handle."
Gerns noticed that the two goblins in front of him did not back down when their companion was killed. Instead, after taking two steps back, they were inspired to attack with courage and anger, and swung their wooden clubs at Engri.
Faced with the goblin charging towards him, Engli steeled his resolve, and his initial nervousness was quickly replaced by an inexplicable surge of courage.
He then gripped the hilt of the short sword with his right hand, bent his body slightly, and secretly gathered power in his feet, one toe forward and the other back. A strange power burst forth from the soles of his feet and arms.
Finally, his body suddenly lunged forward, heading straight towards the goblins.
"Pfft!"
"call out!"
Just as Gerns rushed forward and plunged his short sword into the neck of a goblin, a crossbow bolt grazed his temple at lightning speed and struck another goblin in the head, pinning it precisely to the wall behind Gerns.
Fresh blood mixed with a thick, milky white liquid slowly flowed from the corpse's wounds.
Although Gerns felt a little nauseous at the sight of the horrific scene before him, he was still a goblin, and even though they were both intelligent beings, their height and size were vastly different.
Since the feeling of déjà vu wasn't that strong, the slight discomfort in my stomach was barely tolerable.
Gerns turned around and looked in the direction the crossbow bolt had come from. He saw Korog, who was acting as a scout, standing at the tavern entrance, holding the wooden crossbow that had just fired the bolt.
"Captain, are you alright?"
When he saw Kroger, Gerns breathed a slight sigh of relief, but also seemed somewhat surprised.
He never expected that this kid, who was smaller than everyone else in the team, would be able to keenly sense his teammates' predicament and rescue them from danger.
"I'm fine."
Gerns quickly regained his senses, shook his head slightly, and then looked at Korog and ordered, "Your current task is to quickly return to the camp and request reinforcements. I will cover your return."
"Then, Captain, you..."
"Stop talking nonsense. Now is not the time for this. A soldier's duty is to obey orders. If we're any later, it will be too late once the army arrives."
"yes!"
