Chapter 68 Dragon Breath
Chapter 68 Dragon Breath
"Shall we go take a look?"
Gru yelled, "Are you out of your mind?"
He was the one who asked whether to go or not, but when it came to actually going, he was the first to shake his head.
He didn't expect Wilder to actually dare!
"The fire started in Talia's mission area."
Wilder didn't hide his concerns and directly stated the reason: "She might need help."
"Oh, so it's because of a woman."
Gru curled his lip. "In that case, I can understand. You know, men are men!"
"Talia?"
Geoffrey hadn't heard the name before and guessed, "The girl who was with you at the association yesterday?"
"Um."
Wilder nodded. "I'll do it myself; it's too dangerous..."
It could unleash a fire spell capable of burning down an entire dense forest; if it were a monster, he was certain the team couldn't defeat it.
Whether the two teammates go or not won't make a big difference.
Furthermore, he believed that the fire had nothing to do with Talia.
First, we can rule out the possibility that she started the fire. She is clearly an adventurer without any special skills and could not possibly possess magic.
Secondly, it couldn't have been a monster that put it there.
That's completely unnecessary; a simple bite would have been enough to solve the problem.
Therefore, if Talia was present, she was most likely involved in someone else's battle.
In this situation, she was not the monster's target, and Wilder was confident he could rescue her from her panic.
From an adventurer's perspective, Wilder's decision seems illogical.
He had absolutely no reason to take such a risk for someone he had known for less than two weeks.
Adventurers are all cold-blooded and ruthless!
but……
"Didn't you say this kind of grass is pretty?"
Thinking of the ancient herb still sitting on the hotel table, Wilder decided to give it a try.
Perhaps a simple command combined with a gentle touch could help?
"Little guy! What are you standing there for!"
Gru tiptoed and patted him on the shoulder. "If you're going, hurry up, or you'll miss the first batch of ale when the tavern opens!"
"I don't drink, but I still suggest you hurry."
Joffrey chimed in, "The fire is spreading; it will be too late if we wait any longer."
"You're going too?" Wilder was taken aback.
Joffrey nodded, offering no particularly comforting reason, only saying, "I'll lead the way, you all hurry!"
After saying that, he nimbly climbed up the tree branch and disappeared into the lush canopy.
"Let's go, little one!"
Gru grinned. "That's your woman, don't let Joffrey steal the spotlight!"
"That's not..."
Wilder only said half of what he meant, then gave up and didn't bother to explain further.
Moreover, Talia is indeed very beautiful, and it feels a bit strange that she repeatedly emphasizes that she is not his woman.
"Thanks," he said succinctly. "Let's go!"
The two ran towards the dense forest of fire.
……
There is an hour's walk between B.9 and A.9.
The two walked much faster than usual, and about 45 minutes later, they met Joffrey, who had gone ahead to scout the way.
He was standing on a low, protruding slope.
Below the slope was a dense forest ablaze.
The flames were crimson, the ashes were grayish-white, and some branches were charred black, drooping and broken.
Wilder stood on the low slope and looked down. Judging from the extent of the fire, the flames that had just erupted were about the width of two carriages side by side.
What kind of magic is this?
Is there a spell with this kind of power?
"Good news and bad news," Joffrey said softly.
"Stop keeping me in suspense, just tell me," Wilder replied.
"The good news is, Talia isn't here."
"What about the bad ones?"
There's nobody here.
Joffrey turned his head away with a hint of regret. "I couldn't hear anything around here except the sound of flames scorching the trees. The fire devoured everything in an instant."
"I see."
Wilder sighed.
However, he also knew that this was all he could do.
From the moment you choose to become an adventurer, your life is already on the line, even for beginner quests.
Hopefully she has finished gathering herbs and returned to town.
"Little one, don't worry. Such a powerful fire spell is definitely not enough to deal with your frail little girl."
Gru patted his shoulder again on tiptoe to comfort him.
"But what on earth could cause such a big fire?" he muttered to himself. "Does our town have a mage of that high rank?"
"Do you remember the two dragon breaths that appeared in the Border Forest not long ago?" Joffrey asked.
"You know about this too?" Gru nodded. "You believe it's Long Qian's?"
"I can't imagine any other monster using such a powerful fire spell."
Wilder was stunned as he listened to their conversation.
The last two dragon breath attacks also occurred near Talia's quest location.
And here we are again...
"Let's go back to town," he urged. "It's getting dark."
The group bypassed the burning area and quickly returned to Ironweave Town along the edge.
……
Adventurers' Guild Hall.
Task delivery counter.
"You've gone on another mission?"
Martha greeted the three members of her team.
"Martha, I have some information to provide."
Wilder didn't mention the mission first. "A large fire broke out in area A.19. We suspect it's dragon's breath."
"Dragon's breath has appeared again?!" Martha was stunned. "Is the information reliable? Is the location accurate?"
"We saw it with our own eyes."
"Is anyone injured?"
"No, the fire had been burning for a while when we passed by."
She nodded: "Wait a moment, I'll go report to my superiors."
After she finished speaking, she left the counter and returned fifteen minutes later.
"The association has already sent people to the designated area."
"Hmm." Wilder nodded, then placed the items from his backpack one by one on the counter.
Martha quickly calculated the reward, which was exactly as estimated: twelve gold coins.
She pushed the money pouch in front of Wilder and added, "If the information you provided is true, there will be a reward of ten gold coins."
"Hmm." Wilder nodded.
Martha glanced up at him, sensing that the usually polite monk seemed somewhat distracted today.
"Martha," Wilder suddenly asked, "did Talia come to deliver the mission today?"
"I didn't see it."
She shook her head. "But there are several delivery counters, so she might not have come to mine."
Wilder didn't say anything more, said goodbye, and left the counter.
After splitting the payment with Joffrey and Gru, he went straight back to the Colt Inn.
It was past dusk, and night had fallen.
Outside, where the light was dim, Wilder pushed open the hotel door, revealing a bright and bustling interior.
The sounds of clinking oak glasses, arguing, laughing, and the soft singing of bards blended together.
The aroma of ale mingled with the smell of stew, filling Wilder's nostrils.
He stood at the doorway and glanced around.
Then, at a table in the corner, I saw the girl with brown hair and wearing a long robe.
"Well……"
He suddenly felt hungry.
