Chapter 66 Digger
Chapter 66 Digger
Joffrey led the two men a short distance ahead and hid behind a thicket of bushes.
He parted the dense foliage and pointed to the open space in front of him.
On the smooth, muddy ground, three large earthen caves were clearly visible.
The three openings were of different shapes, but surprisingly similar in width. The soil and rocks around the edges were turned outwards, and there were still some wet, sticky residues.
A mixture of earthy and fishy smells wafted out of the cave entrance, making one feel nauseous.
"This should be it."
Joffrey lowered his voice, "The burrowing worm is probably underground, probably enjoying its afternoon nap."
"That makes sense. If the little one hadn't called me, I would have been doing the same thing."
Gru yawned. "Could we find some work at night next time? I'm most energetic in the early hours of the morning."
"Then we'll need to find a more alluring demon, otherwise I'm afraid you still won't be clear-headed enough."
With Lyle absent, Wilder took on the role of criticizing him.
The three men pulled their heads back from the bushes.
"What's up?" Gru sat down on the ground casually. "What tactics?"
Joffrey looked at Wilder: "Mages are always smart, what do you say?"
"Okay, let's do it this way."
Wilder conceived a plan in his mind: "There are three holes in the ground, and there are exactly three of us. We can trap them like turtles in a jar."
"How do we catch it?" Gru asked.
"We each guarded one of the cave entrances, and then I used the Grease spell to pour grease into one of the entrances."
Wilder picked up a twig and started drawing on the ground, just like Cyrion had done. "The underground tunnels of the burrowing worm must be connected. When the oil flows in, it will definitely come out from another hole."
"The moment it shows its head, I will use a command spell to freeze it for three seconds. You guys take this time to kill it."
Joffrey and Gru both nodded, finding the plan flawless.
But in Wilder's mind, this tactic actually had a fatal flaw.
That means he's very likely to miss out on getting any kills.
If you can't land a fatal blow, you won't gain any experience!
"Shall we begin?" Gru took out his long-handled battle axe from behind his back, eager to try it out.
"Wait a minute."
Wilder thought for a moment and then suggested again, "After all, this is a difficult-level monster, and its leather armor may be very thick. Just to be on the safe side, I will add a buff to each of you."
As he spoke, he drew his staff from his waist and began to gather his strength.
"That one again?" Gru immediately looked expectant.
"Which one?" Joffrey didn't understand.
Eight seconds is very short. Before he could even get an answer, the tip of Wilder's staff, which emitted a faint green light, slammed into him.
"This is……"
His body began to swell uncontrollably until it became twice its original size.
[Giant]
"Little mage, you are truly incredible," he exclaimed.
Wilder did not respond and began to charge up his second spell.
Moments later, Gru's body swelled up, and he became a dwarf giant for the second time.
"It's boring."
He looked up at Joffrey, who was still much taller than him even after growing larger, and scoffed, "When these things get bigger, there's no difference."
"At least the burrowing worm didn't get bigger."
Wilder smiled, feeling much more at ease.
In this way, no matter who kills the burrowing worm in the end, it will be done under his buff spells, and he will get the experience.
At the same time, he began to gather a third spell with his staff.
【Greasy Techniques】
"Start! The Giant Transformation spell only lasts one minute!"
The three of them stepped out of the bushes and onto the open ground in front of them.
It seems lucky; the burrowing worm was actually taking a nap, and even Gru's heavy footsteps couldn't wake it.
The greasy treatment is ready.
A thick layer of oil mist appeared above the hole in front of Wilder.
He raised his staff, slowly and meticulously controlling his magic, allowing the grease to flow precisely into the opening like a thin stream from a teapot spout.
insect.
Awaken from the suffocation of grease.
Wilder prepared [Burning Hand] while waiting for the reaction from underground.
Quiet.
It remained quiet.
Sudden--
"Thump!"
The ground shook.
"Thump! Thump! Thump!"
The tremors came and went.
Immediately afterwards, a muffled buzzing sound came from the cave entrance.
The burrowing worm has awakened!
However, instead of bursting out as expected, it kept making noises underground, seemingly struggling to rub off the grease on its body.
"Let me give you a boost!"
Wilder waved his staff, and the emerald crystal suddenly spewed out tongues of fire, igniting the grease on the inner wall of the cave entrance.
The flames shot straight into the ground from the cave entrance, searching for the hiding prey.
"Thump!!!"
A sound of scales scraping against clods of earth came from beneath my feet, growing closer and closer.
That beast is about to come out!
Wilder looked up, his eyes fixed on the hole beneath Joffrey and Gru's feet.
left?
Or the right side?
"boom!"
With a loud bang, a cloud of smoke and dirt spewed out of the hole beneath Joffrey's feet.
The next second, a huge insect head covered in scales and with long tentacles suddenly emerged from the hole!
"Don't move!!!"
With a roar, Wilder unleashed a surge of magical energy that instantly bewitched the burrowing worm's brain, leaving only half its head protruding from the ground before it remained motionless.
Joffrey immediately took over.
First, two sharp silver needles flew from his hand, accurately hitting the beast's eyes. The moment the needles touched its eyeballs, the poisoned tips instantly blackened its pupils.
Next, he approached like a phantom, his dagger cutting through its scales.
Each cut precisely into the gaps between the scales, penetrating deep into its body, and fresh blood gushed out from between the intact shells.
"Ugh!!!"
Three seconds later, the blood-covered burrowing worm let out a painful hiss and abruptly retreated underground.
What awaited it underground was a raging inferno.
"boom!"
This time, it emerged from under Gru's feet.
"Don't move!!!"
[Command] Repeat the same process, and the burrowing worm once again listlessly exposed its head on the ground.
"I've been waiting for this opportunity for ages, and finally I can use this move!"
Gru, now twice his size, looked down at the burrowing worm's head with an excited expression.
He gripped the axe handle tightly with both hands, raising the long axe high. His strength surged wildly into his upper limbs, veins bulging and muscles bulging—
With a roar, it cleaved down vertically!
The air seemed to be being torn apart.
Vertical slash
This family-inherited combat technique, limited by his height, finally struck the head of a towering monster for the first time.
The burrowing worm, whose scales and flesh had already been severed by Joffrey, could no longer withstand this devastating blow.
"Pfft—"
The entire skull was split in two by a long axe, from the top of the head down to the jaw.
There was no more sound.
The battle ended in less than a minute.
The burrowing worm, just awakened from its sleep, was as dazed as if it had died in a dream.
