Chapter 54: Are 8 okay?
Chapter 54: Are 8 okay?
The rolling waves of earth brought a tremendous roar, and the entire woodland shook as if an earthquake had struck.
"Run!"
Cyrion gave Gru and Wilde a push, then ran at the back of the squad.
The tree spirit was indeed still toying with them.
Although the giant tree it possessed moved slowly, as a high-level magical creature, it clearly possessed more than just the [Tree Leap] spell.
[Entangled Roots]
The roots of the possessed tree are inserted into the ground, and they are controlled to travel and entwine underground at an extremely fast speed.
The giant tree's roots were so long that this forest clearly became its hunting ground, covering an entire area.
In the blink of an eye, the rolling waves of earth had caught up with them and were almost within reach.
"Bang!"
Suddenly, the twisting roots burst out of the soil and coiled up from under their feet!
"You bastard!"
Cyrion slammed his shield down, severing the tendrils of the roots.
But the giant tree has more than one tentacle; one of them swam to Gru's feet.
Gru raised his axe to cut it off, but due to his height, the axe blade was entangled by the roots before it could fall.
"Don't move!"
Cyrion shouted, instantly drawing his one-handed sword and delivering a powerful thrust that precisely pierced the tentacle.
But more tentacles emerged from the ground and entangled Cyrion, who had just finished his action and had no time to dodge.
Wilder raised his staff high, and blazing tongues of fire instantly erupted from the ruby.
[Burning Hand]
"Bang!"
The flames struck the thick roots, instantly shattering them into pieces.
However, the earth had already surged to Wilder's feet, who was running at the front, and the emerging roots immediately wrapped around his legs.
Cyrion plucked the root fragments from his body, and with a swift thrust of his one-handed sword, he shattered the tentacles beneath Wilde's feet.
More and more roots and stems emerged from the ground.
While Gru and Cyrion, as warriors, could barely manage, Wilde began to reveal the limitations of a mage.
Normally, with two warriors at the front, he has ample time and space to prepare his spells, but now they are both too busy to help themselves, and he has no way to build up his spells.
Cyrion had no choice but to distract himself and help him defend, smashing away the tentacles that lunged at him with his shield in his left hand, and using his one-handed sword in his right hand to stab back the tentacles that were wrapping around Wilder.
But two fists can't fight four hands.
Moreover, it has more than four tentacles.
Cyrion was quickly overwhelmed; one of his shield strikes went astray, and his entire body tilted to one side.
The tentacles quickly seized the opportunity, climbing upwards from the shield he was touching the ground, eventually enveloping him, shield, and sword.
Wilder finally prepared his Burning Hand.
Blazing flames shot out from the head of the staff.
But with the roots entangled with Cyrion, Wilder could only slightly miss, shattering a few tentacles on the shield.
The tentacles below remained tightly wrapped around his ankles, then suddenly rose upwards, pulling Cyrion toward the towering tree.
"Cyrion!"
Gru roared and swung his axe to chase after him, but the roots contracted as quickly as they spread, giving him no chance at all.
Immediately afterwards, the other roots seemed to abandon Wilde and Gru, and together they retreated towards the giant tree.
As they retreated back beneath the giant tree, a long, sharp branch lashed down from the canopy and plunged into Cyrion's thigh.
"Pfft—"
"ah!!!"
Cyrion let out an extremely painful roar.
Then, the branch bent upwards, lifting Cyrion into the air, level with the height of the tree crown.
Although it's impossible to tell where the giant tree's eyes are, it always feels like it's observing and admiring its spoils with its gaze.
The tree spirit stopped attacking.
The woodland has returned to tranquility.
Sweat streamed down the dwarf's forehead as he gasped for breath, staring blankly at the towering tree.
"What...is it doing?"
"You're enjoying it, aren't you?"
Wilder recalled the scene when he last faced the Phase Spiders. The magical creatures possessed intelligence, unlike the kobolds who simply followed their instincts to quickly devour their prey.
They revel in the thrill of killing, are captivated by the fear and submission of their prey, and feel smug about it.
"brute!"
Gru cursed, then gritted his teeth, his tone unusual, "Wilde, we have to get Cyrion out."
"No." Wilder shook his head. "What we need to do is kill this tree spirit."
In the tree spirit's eyes, Wilde and Gru were already prey in a cage; the reason they weren't caught earlier was simply for the sake of hunting fun.
The roots' reach was too wide; even if they rescued Cyril, they still wouldn't be able to escape.
It must be killed!
"Kill it?" Gru was stunned.
Rescuing Cyrion was already incredibly difficult, let alone killing the tree spirit.
"Cyrion's leg is injured, and we can't run fast with him in our arms. The roots are too fast underground, and we can't escape."
Wilder simply stated his reasoning: "We must find a way to kill the tree spirit, or we'll all die."
Gru understood.
"How do we kill it? According to the previous plan?" He gripped his battle axe tightly. "I'll draw its attention, you use that command spell to immobilize it, then set it on fire!"
"No." Wilder shook his head.
First of all, Gru alone cannot hold off the powerful tree spirit.
Secondly, the giant tree is too large, making it difficult for the Burning Hand to kill it.
Moreover, its bark is too hard, and it appears to have a very high proportion of active bark, so whether it can be ignited is another matter.
What should I do?
What should we do now?
There's no time left!
Wilder forced himself to calm down and kept thinking about possible solutions.
Suddenly, a silver coin lying on the bed surface flashed into his mind.
"Gru".
Wilder spoke slowly, "The horizontal slash you learned from your father, could it split that giant tree in two?"
"How is that possible?! You could see how thick that tree trunk is!"
Gru shook his head, then said, "If you were saying there were ten of me, that would be possible."
"What if there were eight of you?"
"What?!" Even the dwarf, usually known for his humor, was anything but. "You're joking at a time like this! Cyrion's about to die!"
"I'm not joking."
Wilder stared at him. "If I gave you eight times the weight, could you chop that giant tree down?"
"ah?!"
Wilder didn't explain further.
Their time was indeed running out; Cyrion was bleeding profusely, and the treant's time to play was also very limited.
He gripped the staff, and magic flowed from his palm into the ruby, where the structure of the spell began to take shape.
"Gru, in a moment I will make your body twice the size and your weight eight times."
"You only have one minute, after which everything will return to normal. For the first part of that minute, you need to attract the giant tree's attention."
"Then I took the opportunity to get close to it and made the possessed tree spirit freeze for three seconds."
"Finally, you will need an axe twice the size and eight times the weight to chop down that towering tree!"
Wilder finished speaking in one breath, and the spell structure in the staff was just completed.
"I... grew to twice my size?"
Before Gru could finish speaking, Wilder's staff had already struck him on the head.
[Giant]
moment.
A white light suddenly appeared.
Before the dwarf could figure out what was happening, his field of vision suddenly began to rise rapidly.
next second.
He experienced a wider view than he had ever seen in his life.
