Chapter 729 The Truth
Hogwarts, Great Hall.
"Can you tell us now?" Mad-Eye Moody led Siron among the professor and the Order of the Phoenix members, asking, "What happened there before we got to Godric's Hollow?"
"Professor Dumbledore did this to help me," Sirius said. "We agreed beforehand that I wanted—"
Siren paused subconsciously, unsure whether he should reveal the secret of the Horcruxes here—after all, Dumbledore had never done so.
Perhaps it was to lower Voldemort's guard, or perhaps he feared the allure of immortality was too great and some might be led astray.
In short, before he was killed, most members of the Order of the Phoenix, with the exception of a very small number of people, were unaware that Voldemort had ever created Horcruxes.
So, is he going to say it now?
Just as Siron was caught in a dilemma, Mad-Eye Moody suddenly spoke up.
"We already know that," he said quickly. "You want to try a way to provoke the mysterious man, to force him to show himself. He also told us to be ready to provide backup at any time."
Among the crowd, several members of the Order of the Phoenix nodded subconsciously, confirming that this was indeed the case; they had also received similar messages.
"It seems your operation was a success, and the Mystic really did come looking for you," Mad-Eye Moody continued. "But what we really want to know is why the Mystic was able to kill Dumbledore, since he had never won before."
""
"Because of—the curse." Sirius looked down at Mad-Eye Moody, his gaze sweeping across Moody's sleeve before settling on the stone platform where Dumbledore lay.
"curse?"
"How is that possible—"
"What curse could kill Dumbledore?"
"That's true, and many of you know that," Siren said, his tone becoming much smoother.
"Dumbledore's right hand."
"I remember now!" Hermione suddenly shouted, "Dumbledore's right hand was black when school started."
At her reminder, everyone present remembered that there was indeed such a thing.
"Is that a curse?"
"That's terrible. Didn't Dumbledore return to normal after that?" someone asked.
"It's just suppression, not complete erasure. If you observe closely, you'll notice that his little finger has always been black," Xilen said, his gaze sweeping through the crowd.
He was looking for Snape, and of everyone present, only Snape knew the truth.
But strangely, Snape wasn't there.
Almost all the members of the Order of the Phoenix, as well as the Hogwarts professors, were there, except for Snape, who was nowhere to be found at this time.
"Voldemort's curse is constantly weakening Professor Dumbledore's magic and energy, he—"
"Sorry, Siren," Mad-Eye suddenly interrupted Siren.
"We all understand your courage to confront the mysterious man, and everyone here does too, but I believe courage isn't just about calling him by his name—in fact, that name could very well reveal our current location. Do you understand what I mean?"
"Of course, I understand." Xiren nodded.
When Dumbledore was still alive, they could call Voldemort by his full name without hesitation, because even if he knew, he wouldn't dare to come over directly.
Now that they no longer have Dumbledore's influence, it would be foolish for them to recklessly reveal their location as before.
"The mysterious man—" Sirren immediately changed his words, "During the fight with him, Professor Dumbledore's reactions became slower and slower—in addition, he shamelessly let the Death Eaters surround me. Dumbledore was worried about my safety, which is how Voldemort seized the opportunity—"
Professor McGonagall covered her mouth, Lupin sighed, and Professor Sprout's lips trembled.
Mrs. Pomfrey suddenly burst into tears, but no one noticed her, as most people were immersed in endless grief.
“You don’t need to blame yourself, Ollivander,” Moody said to Siron. “That’s over two hundred Death Eaters. We all know what that means. Even two hundred warthogs can trample a powerful wizard to death.”
"Alastor is right," Professor McGonagall said, sobbing. "In fact, the fact that you managed to escape alive already puts you ahead of most of us."
"I'm definitely not going to escape anyway," Tonks said casually. "Don't even mention two hundred Death Eaters, I'd be dead even if there were twenty."
It's clear that they're all trying to comfort Sheren in their own ways, not wanting him to be consumed by guilt over "Dumbledore was killed by me."
However, what they said was true. There were over two hundred Death Eaters, and they were all elite members of the Death Eaters. Any one of them would most likely have been killed on the spot.
But not only did Xilun survive, he also escaped.
If Dumbledore hadn't died in battle, Mrs. Weasley might have thrown a celebration party for Sherren.
"Thank you, Professor, I understand—" Siren said softly.
However, the group had little time to grieve. The Death Eaters did not cease their attack because of Dumbledore's death; on the contrary, their actions became even more reckless.
The members of the Order of the Phoenix had to leave, and Mad-Eye Moody was the first to walk out of the auditorium.
"Wait a minute, Alastor," Mrs. Weasley called to him. "I'd like to know if you're the new Secret Service agent."
"No," Moody shook his head. "You should ask Sirius."
"I've already asked, and nobody said it," Mrs. Weasley said, her face grim. "Has anyone seen Mundungus?"
A buzz of discussion immediately filled the auditorium.
It was then that everyone realized that Mundungus, who had tried to escape earlier, was not among them—or rather, he had never come to Hogwarts at all.
Everyone was eager to come to Hogwarts, but he took the opportunity to run away.
"This is troublesome," Lupin sighed. "If he's the new Secret Service agent—I mean, almost everyone knows Mundungus isn't exactly a brave man."
Sirius's face darkened. He thought of Peter Pettigrew from back then; he and Mundungus were so alike.
"It's alright, let's abandon Grimmauld Place for now." Moody made a quick decision. "Arthur, Molly, you two go back immediately and gather the important documents. Reactivate the Burrow as our temporary headquarters—if you don't mind."
"That couldn't be better." Without any hesitation, the two left Hogwarts as quickly as possible.
There are indeed some important things in Grimmauld Place, and they need to take them all before Mundungus betrays the Order of the Phoenix.
