Chapter 216 Doctor Octopus
In a New York buffet restaurant, Gwen stood dumbfounded in front of all the meat dishes, drooling, until Connors reminded her.
"Hehe, I'm rich now, hehe, I'm rich now, hehe—"
The reward for recovering the gold brute wasn't much money, but it was a lifesaver for Gwen.
At least she can have enough money to eat and pay the rent she owes.
Sitting at the dining table, Connors watched Gwen devour her food, making the Western meal feel like a hearty feast from Northeast China. He himself didn't eat a single bite, only drinking some soda—the food that was delicious to Gwen was less appealing to him than a box of fried stinky tofu.
Having eaten and drunk their fill, and with night already falling, Gwen showed no sign of wanting to rest.
"I need to go back to the sewers and find 'Dr. Lizard'."
This beast-like creature must be dealt with, otherwise Gwen is worried that it might suddenly burst out from somewhere in the city and randomly devour an unlucky passerby.
Having drunk a bellyful of soda, Connors and Gwen found a deserted alley again. Gwen packed her everyday clothes into her backpack and used cobwebs to stick them to a corner.
"Set off!"
She took a step forward, then pulled it back:
"Can your good luck work again? I don't want to wander aimlessly through the sewers like a headless fly."
Gwen had no doubt that Connors' so-called "good luck" was just a combination of "reorganization" and "telepathy," and she looked at Connors with some anticipation.
"That gives me room to improvise," Connors casually pointed.
"In this direction!"
He was referring to the direction of "Doctor Octopus's" secret laboratory, which was found through "telepathy".
"Why are all these people PhDs, and why do they all like to work in the sewers?"
A few minutes later, as they walked through the stinky sewers with Gwen, Connors covered his nose and complained.
He could have used "polymer chain mimicry" to change his physiological structure and not need to breathe, but just now he suddenly remembered that a magazine seemed to have said that "foreign sewers are clean".
So he tried to take a breath, and thankfully he didn't faint from the stench. He didn't know how Gwen managed to crawl into the sewer without batting an eye.
"Maybe it's because this place is just too smelly, and those guys need a secluded place," Gwen whispered.
"How can they stand such a stench?" Connors asked, barely suppressing his nausea as he recalled the stench.
"They're probably used to me being the same way," Gwen said.
Connors patted the gentle, seemingly weak shoulder—a shoulder whose upper limit of strength was unknown to him:
"We will find them."
As soon as he finished speaking, a white light appeared in a distant corner of the dimly lit sewer.
"That's the light from the halogen lamps that are commonly used in laboratories!" Gwen whispered, placing her hand on the sewer wall and then climbing to the top like a real spider, defying gravity.
Gwen crawled along the wall at a speed no slower than walking, and in the blink of an eye she had already darted far away, and Connors quickly followed.
At the corner, two people stood silently against the wall, looking at a large, brightly lit area behind them.
Despite being a sewer, the numerous lights and experimental equipment here make it look like a proper laboratory.
In the center of the "laboratory," a figure wearing a white lab coat, with his back to them, was pressing a button on a machine.
Behind him, four retractable mechanical arms each performed their own function, constantly fiddling with various electronic devices.
So many experimental instruments were lost, conservatively estimated to be worth hundreds of thousands. And what about those BRICS countries? Is the police in the US really that useless?
Connors thought to himself, watching "Doctor Octopus" busily working with great interest.
"Doctor Octopus? I thought you were pointing to 'Doctor Lizard'!" Gwen whispered to Connors.
"They're all the same, all PhDs," Connors said dismissively.
Gwen wanted to say something more, but "Doctor Octopus's" voice rang out, unusually gentle, as if this guy with four mechanical arms flying behind him was just a kind university professor:
"Come out, Spider-Woman. I've found you."
Doctor Octopus didn't turn around, but his voice came through, making it impossible for Gwen, who had planned to sneak around and observe for a while, to continue hiding.
She came out from around the corner and stepped into the light of the halogen lamp.
"Professor Otto, your experiments require a lot of time and help, and working in the sewers will not speed up your research."
"Come with me, and I'll find a way to remove those four mechanical arms so you can return to a normal life."
"You can go back to the surface instead of hiding in the sewers."
Superheroes, especially Spider-Man, often engage in verbal sparring before a fight, and Spider-Gwen is no exception.
Unfortunately, "Doctor Octopus" completely ignored her words and continued with his own busy work.
"Please wait patiently, the experiment I'm currently conducting is crucial."
"But Doctor, experiments can be restarted if they fail, but once you go astray, it's not easy to get back on track," Gwen said.
Do you think this is a wrong path?
"Doctor Octopus," with his back to Gwen, raised one of his mechanical arms, his voice unusually gentle:
"No, even a hundred helpers can't compare to a robotic arm with its high precision and stability. You should know that I've used them to complete countless amazing experiments."
Gwen interrupted him:
"But now they've become one with you! They're controlling you! The old Dr. Otto wouldn't have gone into the sewers."
I would never rob a bank!
"Don't rush, don't rush—" Doctor Octopus reassured her, noticing the urgency in Gwen's voice.
Gwen stood there helplessly. "Doctor Octopus" kept his back to her and showed no signs of aggression.
Gwen felt she could try to persuade him further instead of resorting to violence.
But no matter what she said next, "Dr. Octopus" would only respond with things like "Don't worry" or "It'll be ready soon."
Connors felt that since Gwen was already in the light, it was no fun for him to hide in the corner alone, so he simply went up to "Doctor Octopus" and watched him fiddle with those incomprehensible instruments and calculate formulas he couldn't understand.
Connors could have easily learned these things using the "super brain" brought about by "human limits" and "photosynthesis," but there was no need for him to.
More than ten minutes later, seeing that the experiment was coming to an end, Connors consciously slipped out of the laboratory, leaving it to Gwen and "Dr. Octopus".
brush!
Without uttering a single wasted word, "Doctor Octopus" turned around with a ferocious expression, and a mechanical arm flew straight toward Gwen.
The front end of the arm deformed during flight, assembling into a metal drill bit. The drill bit was incredibly sharp, and under the illumination of the halogen lamp, it seemed to draw a white line in the air.
The extended end of the mechanical arm was Gwen's throat. Beneath the gentle voice of "Doctor Octopus" lay his fierce killing intent towards "Spider-Gwen"!
