Chapter 3 The Dean's Scarecrow
Chapter 3 The Dean's Scarecrow
Harvey quickly let go, and the group took a short time to go up the elevator. When they entered the department, the people inside were preparing reagents with their backs to them.
Marshall knocked on the door. "Dean, I've brought a new recruit."
Zheng En wasn't sure who this "newcomer" referred to—himself, Harvey, or both.
The man in the white coat didn't pay them any attention immediately. Marshall waited, unfazed, and whispered to Harvey, "That's how big shots are."
The person inside was humming a song. When he turned around, Zheng Encai saw that he was wearing blue rubber gloves and holding a test tube containing a small amount of dark green liquid, which was bubbling slightly as he shook it.
He put the test tubes back on the shelf and glanced at them casually.
Marshall spoke up at the opportune moment, "This is Harvey Block, my new partner. He's the one who sent this guy."
"Okay, you can leave now."
The dean lowered his head and continued fiddling with his reagents, never once glancing at them directly.
Before leaving, Zheng En noticed the nameplate on his desk—Jonathan Klein.
Wait, isn't that the name of the Scarecrow?
When she was locked in the ward, Jung Eun was still having a brainstorming session.
He remembered a version where Scarecrow became the headmaster of Arkham, from the Dark Knight trilogy, back when Gotham was just an ordinary crime capital.
Although the Joker appeared shortly afterward, that was a later event.
At least for now, Arkham Asylum is just an insane asylum that exonerates gangsters, organizes organ trafficking, human trafficking, and human experimentation...
In short, everything is still under control.
"You're right, Batman," Jung Eun asked him in her mind.
Batman, who overheard everything because the other person didn't try to hide their thoughts, was speechless.
He paused for a moment, then said, "You're really optimistic." Such an optimistic person is rare, even in Gotham.
He started by making small talk to build rapport, and then asked the question he really wanted to ask: "You know a lot about scarecrows?"
Even in Gotham, not everyone knows the real names of the supervillains.
But his question was interrupted.

[The prerequisite storyline has been completed. Prerequisite quests are now available. Please select the following quest side quest.]
Mission 1: Escape Arkham
You're just an ordinary person. This sudden time travel hasn't brought you much benefit; instead, it's gotten you into a mess. The sword of Damocles hangs over your head, ready to fall at any moment.
You don't want to be dismembered into pieces, nor do you want to become a test subject for a scarecrow.
You have to leave here.
Fortunately, with Batman's help, this shouldn't be too difficult.
[Mission Reward: Five thousand US dollars (This amount of money is enough for you to settle down in Gotham for the time being, barring any unforeseen circumstances)]
Save point x1 (Don't forget you've already loaded the system; just think of this as a life simulator)
Simulated points x1 (How can a decent game be without gacha pulls? Miracles happen with single pulls, my friend!)
[Task Two: I Can Do More]
Before you transmigrated, you were just an ordinary person, and you are still the same now, but you've had enough of a mediocre life and you don't want to just accept your fate passively.
You can just run away like that, but what happens after that?
Marshall, who got you arrested, is still at large, Arkham remains a criminal hotspot, and Gotham remains unchanged day after day.
You want them to pay the price.
Some intelligence, some evidence, and something that could put them in jail at the right time.
Or, how about we blow this place to smithereens?
[Task Reward: $10,000 (A magnificent life requires a lot of money)]
Save point x1 (same as above)
Penetrating telescope (as its name suggests, it combines both perspective and telescopic functions, making it an essential tool for home, travel, and even robbery).
Simulated points x10 (Ten consecutive double gold coins, a sure-fire way to make a fortune)
Batman Skill Fragments: Gun Skills Basics (Every Gotham resident should learn how to use a gun)
Batman Skill Fragments: Melee Combat Basics (Maybe you'll be the next Gotham Fighting King)
[Friendly Reminder: After accepting the quest, you will receive a beginner's gift pack as initial supplies, depending on your choices.]
The rewards for these two tasks are vastly different.
Jung Eun silently sought Batman's opinion, "What do you think, Batman?"
Although the reward for Mission Two is very generous, he is still just an ordinary person. Even with Batman's help, finding evidence or blowing up the hospital will not be an easy task.
"If you're just an ordinary person, I'd suggest you choose mission one."
Both the description of the mission and Jung Eun's thoughts when she asked him for help made Batman realize that Jung Eun perceived herself as an ordinary person.
Batman found it absurd.
He couldn't understand how an ordinary person could have such a thing as a system in their mind.
But the other party seemed oblivious to this blatant anomaly, continuing to believe they were just an ordinary person.
"Why?" Batman's words surprised Zheng En. He thought the other man would persuade him to choose mission two.
To paraphrase a certain blond-haired, dark-skinned man, Batman's love interest is Gotham.
He loves this city and is dedicated to fighting crime, but now that crime is blatantly obvious, he wants Jung Eun to do nothing.
"I don't know where you get your knowledge of me from, but I don't want people who aren't capable enough to follow the same path as me." This is Batman's true feeling.
He repeatedly dissuaded young people who tried to follow in his footsteps and embark on the path of a volunteer police officer.
The road was not as glamorous as they had imagined. It was accompanied by blood, sweat, dust... pain, and the heavy burden of death.
Every day, every night patrol, could be a one-way trip.
A moment of carelessness or negligence could bury a precious life forever.
One's own, or one's companion's.
Those who lack talent and awareness cannot and should not embark on this path.
"Ordinary people just want ordinary lives, and they should stay as far away from criminals and fighting criminals as possible." This was Batman's initial motivation for saving Gotham City. "You want to be an ordinary person, that's fine."
"But what if I don't want to?"
Hearing Batman's words only fueled Zheng En's fighting spirit. "If I was an ordinary person before transmigrating, and I'm still an ordinary person after transmigrating, then what's the point of my transmigration?"
Jung Eun decisively chose task two.
Batman wasn't surprised; this was exactly what he wanted to see.
It's good that someone with extraordinary abilities doesn't cause trouble and just lives like an ordinary person; revealing their abilities under his provocation also allows him to formulate corresponding plans to deal with the situation.
[Task 2: I Can Do More (Accepted)]
