Chapter 540 Conflict
The orc warrior carefully parted the dew-covered vines, and the sight before him eased his mind; it was indeed a human.
He was tall and slender, dressed in a long, jet-black robe of seemingly ordinary material, yet it occasionally emitted a faint, eerie glow. As for his face—
What an exquisite sissy! But perhaps he's a powerful mage; mages love to be particular. With that, the orc glanced at the mage in his party and then reaffirmed his guess.
That's right, this human is Rune.
At this moment, the human mage in the squad frowned, raised his staff, and pointed it directly at Rune: "Hey! You! State your identity and purpose! Otherwise, don't blame us for being impolite!"
However, an awkward situation arises: the language used in World of Warcraft is not Chinese, English, or any other language. The people here have their own languages, such as the common language of humans, the language of orcs, and even the murlocs have a language that sounds like they have phlegm stuck in their throats.
Unfortunately, Rune hasn't yet learned the magic to quickly master a language. However, he's currently rapidly reading the stalker's memories in order to learn the language of this universe.
Therefore, in the team's eyes, he merely tilted his head slightly and then fell silent. His silence, in this tense atmosphere, was interpreted as contempt.
"Are you deaf?" The human mage stepped forward, his face full of arrogance.
A few years ago, he did learn a lot from Dalaran, but he also picked up some bad habits, such as prejudice and arrogance.
Having acquired the power to alter reality, mages easily develop a sense of superiority. Moreover, in Dalaran, academic competition and even hierarchical distinctions exist between different factions within the academy.
Just as computer science majors discriminate against other STEM majors, other STEM majors discriminate against civil engineering majors, and all STEM majors discriminate against humanities majors, this is true even in universities, let alone magic schools.
The mage even recognized the origin of the robe on Rune's body—ha, typical shadow-shaping magic!
In the universe of Azeroth, a mysterious group of beings known as the Firstborn shaped the structure of the universe and all of reality, and conceived and created six cosmic forces that govern reality: Light, Void, Order, Chaos, Life, and Death.
Pure void cannot exist in the physical universe, but its shadow in the real world manifests as shadow magic, a projection of one of the six cosmic forces in reality.
This power is indeed strong, but the price is equally heavy, because the nature of the void cannot coexist with life and reason as known to mortals. Therefore, this magic will push mortals to madness at all costs.
Although this mage and even the entire Dalaran are unaware of this information yet, they are well aware of the fate of those who use shadow magic.
Even in Dalaran, where intense arcane energy permeates the air and strange creatures such as magical dragons and arcane elementals abound in the surrounding area and even within the city, shadow magic-related creations are among the first to be eliminated.
Of course, there are still many foolish or powerful mages researching this dangerous magic. After all, in Dalaran, as long as you don't study necromancy, you can study whatever you want, even shadow magic.
"I'm asking you a question! Why did you use such a dangerous spell? Do you know what the consequences will be!" Seeing that Rune still didn't answer, the human mage's expression grew increasingly impatient.
The paladin tried to stop him: "Wait, he hasn't shown any hostility, perhaps we can—"
However, the orc warrior's patience had run out. The days of fighting, the deaths of his comrades, and his distrust of all the unknowns led him to choose the most direct approach.
He drew his massive double-bladed battle axe from his back, slamming the heavy blade onto the muddy ground, sending up a cloud of filth. He roared, "I don't care who you are! Sneaking around here at a time like this makes you a suspicious person! Put down your weapon—"
The orc warrior glanced at Rune; he seemed to be unarmed. He swallowed his words and continued, "It doesn't matter. Just come with us now, or I can't guarantee you'll walk into prison unharmed!"
"Prison?" Rune finally spoke, and in Common, "For what? For stepping into this unclaimed land? Or—for simple fear?"
His Mandarin accent is strange, but his word usage is quite accurate.
What the orcs didn't know was that Rune chose to learn Common Tongue instead of Orcish simply because the latter sounded vulgar.
But the mage in the squad was enraged by Rune. Why didn't he answer a single word when he questioned him, but Rune answered when the orcs were talking to him?
Am I really not even as good as an orc?
"Unclaimed land? This is Kalimdor! It's Alliance and Horde territory! And your next destination is the prison!"
As the human mage spoke, he launched arcane missiles. Several dazzling purple streaks of energy tore through the air with a destructive force, but what happened next left everyone present dumbfounded.
Rune simply raised his left hand and gently squeezed it against the incoming arcane missile.
There was no explosion, no impact; those arcane missiles, brimming with destructive power—powerful spells capable of collapsing a wall—came to a halt less than a meter away from him.
After the runes straightened out the structure of the spell, the arcane missile disintegrated on its own, turning into starlight and a few tiny fragments falling to the ground.
"Interesting—" Rune exclaimed. The magical properties contained in arcane magic are truly amazing. It is different from the magic in DC and Marvel. It is extremely chaotic, yet it also has a magical affinity.
The human mage's expression immediately turned to horror. "This is impossible! You—"
Rune frowned; this human mage had interrupted his thoughts, which annoyed him. So Rune focused his self-light on the mage and uttered a soft shout: "Shut up!"
The next moment, the space around the human mage suddenly collapsed inward, and he felt an invisible, enormous force pressing him firmly to the ground, his magnificent robes being crushed into the mud.
No! I spent hundreds of gold coins to buy this excellent quality robe! The human mage cried out in his heart.
"What did you do to my people?!" The orc warrior's eyes were bloodshot. He let out a deafening battle roar, and his body burst into red light. His huge body, composed of bulging muscles, charged straight at Rune like a war chariot, and the battle axe in his hand made a terrifying sound as it whistled through the air.
Orcs are natural warriors. After drinking demon blood, their physical abilities become extremely powerful, and they are also very irritable, which gave them a huge advantage when they invaded Azeroth.
As the de facto leader of the patrol, this orc warrior was among the strongest in the entire tribe. He firmly believed that even a kodo beast standing in his way would be cleaved in two by this attack.
However, Rune merely watched the warrior with interest, even though his actions fueled the orc warrior's anger. The mage from another world, however, had a completely different focus.
Perhaps I should let him make a cut and test this new energy?
